SS Springs on 75 Duster

-
well....it went flat....so tomorrow it comes off and see what the deal is...

Well...took the tire off...pulled the tube out...can not find a hole in the tube...leak is at the valve stem...as drag tubes have the valve core in another valve stem that screws into the tube...the leak is around the where the stem...so I swapped it out ...and looks like it may not be leaking going to let tube sit over night....

went flat again....going to replace tube tomorrow...

Ordered fiberglass rear bumper for this duster....another 65 lbs for the bumper and reinforcing beam.....still will have the shock absorber for awhile.....

Ok....put another tube in tire......lets see if this one hold air

Fiberglass rear bumper is on the UPS truck......

going to see what i can make for rear brackets and get rid of shocks...

Fiberglass bumper is here...did not have time to check it out...had to drop off some heads at a machine shop.......

old bumper off...new fiberglass bumper on....

make brackets from 1 inch square tubing and used the old flat brackets from old bumper.....a good 80 plus lbs gone..

Ok...fired it up this morning and back it out of garage for awhile....everything done for now....still want to put in bar that goes from main hoop to frame connector....but will nothing on the schedule for racing ...looks like a got until November....lol..
going to see what Bakersfield and Top Gun revised schedule look like...

Had to get room for engines being build....working on a couple...

Looks like Top Gun Raceway is running June 13 and 14......gotta figure if I wan to drive that far.....plus their DA is well over 6000 ft....probably 7000 ft.

Last time I was there the track was 3 tenth slower then Vegas....old Demon ran 11.30 there....next weekend in Sacramento it ran 10.70s.....So.....lets think about this one....

plus they race during the day....go to watch the weather forecast...

Bakersfield is 50 miles closer.....but aint open....since it is in Kalifornia....with Nancy Pelosi nephew.....

Gearing up to go to Top Gun....weather looks pretty good....73 on saturday...78 on sunday.....

washed up car....checking stuff in trailer...need to pick up another 5 gallons of e85........tomorrow is Decision day.....lol

Car is loaded in Trailer....plenty of E85.....just need to wash truck tomorrow...and get some food for the track...booked room in Fallon

Long trip wind blow truck and trailer all over the place. Stop in tonopah you make repair to motorhome daughter is using
Had electrical problems batter relay switch bad

Got there Friday evening at 8 pm....got escorted to pit space. Saturday Morning unloaded car and proceeded to check everything..oil...water...tire pressure...brake fluid....
Couple hours later as we were getting closer to making our 1st time run I started up car to drive around pit to warm it up....as I was backing out of stall the transmission cooler line burst dumping 4 qts of Type f tranny fluid. Looking at the damage I could see i could repair line but would have to remove radiator to get at it....no big deal only 2 bolts hold it in....i realized i would not make that time run... ok...fixed line....now the fun...start up engine with no water to quickly check fluid level...i had already dumped 2 qts in it....and had to add 2 more...luckily had 5 qts in the trailer.

Needed water for radiator...need container to get water....fellow racing from Vegas gave me a container....but then I found out there none of the faucets had any water only the bathroom but needed a hose and funnel...So I dumped bottle water into the radiator....12 ounces at a time.....

Used several can of brake cleaner to clean off the residue of the tranny fluid...I fire up car...drive to staging lines....well..the dam thing would not warm up above 150 degrees...leaving the water pump off ...and cycling it on / off....At the hit..the car fell flat on it face.....then ran 11.87 at 116+.....mile an hour looked good the but the ET sucked...

so looking for a dial in....I figured 116.44 should be somewhere in the 11.40s....so I wrote 11.40 on window...got car good and warm...race an F body mustang that was turbo charged....his dial 9.59 mine 11.40.....about 1000 ft mark i could see he was still way back there....and at the 1st light i hit the brakes....running 11.57 at 102....he was 6 tenths off his dial in....

So sorting thru the couple of time slips in the car looking for something to compare incremental times with.....as only time slips i had were in the 11.20 from Vegas....making a dumb *** guess...i was going to dial somewhere in the 11.50s.....as we are put on a ladder after round 1...next guy was local with a Road Runner 440...dial in at 11.50....so what the hell...I dialed 11.50...heads up...time slip below....close ran down the track...but i should have dialed 11.55..but i still would have lost....

Sunday....a new day...a new race.....warmer and head wind...

car runs 11.61 at 114.xx.......round one....dial 11.60,,,,,the other guy is 10.65,,,,down track he is way back there...and I hit those Strange Disc brakes again....take the win light...he had a terrible reaction time....ok.....

Before that round I had decided that i was leaving after that round win or lose....it was 2 pm now and i had a 7 hour drive back to
Vegas...dont like driving at night...dont like driving on that two lane highway at night...

So i left as a Winner....lol

I love that Dodge 2500 Cummings Diesel...what a truck...

Please tell me you didn’t have screw hose clamps on the transmission lines like most Mopar guys that spill fluid all over the place.

Looks like fun.. I should have stuck around for sat and sun.

No it is all #6 steel braided line with AN fitting....leaked right where the hose went into the fitting....

They call the Mopar races in the Ohio, Pennsylvania area the “oil-down Nationals” and rightly so because of some of the shortcuts some Mopar racers take. And honestly I can’t deny deny it. It’s embarrassing to see what some Mopar guys take to the track. Hose clamps, 50 yards of rubber line, hoses wire-tied to stuff instead of mounted right, hoses and wires right through holes drilled through the frame. I’ve seen some real dozie’s. Don’t ask my why but transmission lines lead the list.

Getting the old bracket bomber ready....pulled valve covers and adjust the valves.....changed jets for sea level....aka stock jets...lol..

check oil and water...brake fluid......probably charge battery too...even though it has an alternator....
See how much e85 i have left over from the last trip.....

Needs a good bath but not until it ready to go in trailer...

double check for spare parts in trailer...gaskets...rocker arms...distributor...plug n plug wires...etc...

washed the dirty engine compartment today...fired it up to make sure nothing leaked.....Air tires tomorrow...and then it goes in Trailer on Wednesday.....Thursday load and check out the trailer....hook up truck thursday night.....hit road Friday afternoon ....after work....

food too...

Made it to Bakersfield last weekend...and once again Bakersfield won....

Left Vegas at 1 pm....arrived at 6 pm.....5 hrs...323 miles...one stop in Barstow for Diesel and pee.....

Unloaded Friday night and teched the car...found some friends...and pitted with them....

Saturday ......do final checks....drive around pits warming up engine.... Called to lanes...

Do burn out...engine dies....does not want to starts...does start...dies again...starts and i get it to stage.....falls on it face at the hit....runs 11.33 @ 117.......ok
Last time it ran it was at DA 7000 ft....make some idle adjustments ...check floats every looks good...

2nd pass.....it launches clean.....actually feel the from tires grab some air....get to the time booth...11.51 @ 113.......WTF....

We checked valve lash...timing...carb setting and jets....but we can hear a ticking noise in the valve train...not an exhaust leak...

removed rockers....i find the ball on one of the adjuster looks well used...replace the complete rocker..,,,,

Run compression test...all eight cylinders at right a 155 lbs...

WE still hear ticking noise....can actually feel something while it is running went you put your hand on the intake manifold.....so...I park it...,,,,Get a 40 dollar refund for Sundays race ....

Fresno Mopar racers....bring some food....and I ate good with them....Ribs...steak...

Left Track at 10 am.....arrived at house at 3 pm in Vegas......I love that 2016 Dodge 2500 Cumming ....

Tehachapi Pass....Mountain Pass and the dreaded Baker Grade.....piece of cake...

Wont be able to pull intake off until this coming weekend.....working on something else..
