i have a pleathera of 273 and 318 engines to steal parts from to build up my 340 block.

I need help with rocker arm selection for my build. Should I reuse my adjustable rocker arms from the 1967 273 or the used stamped rocker arms out of my 68 or 77 318 used engines or purchase something new. I want the rocker arms to fit under stock valve covers.

My 340 build will fall somewhere between 350-375 hp with mostly stock parts. Don't think I will Rev more than 5600 with the proposed cam and auto transmission. My plan will me to use the rockers the on a set of J heads as soon as I find a pair of bare cores.

Are there any benifits to reuseing the old stuff or should I just buy new. Have you experienced and pros or cons to recycling. Do I need to have anything reworked before reusing? I spoke to an 'ole boy at Rocker Arms Unlimited. We talked about installing bronze bushings in my adjustable rockers, new rocker arm shafts and new lockable adjustable pushrods hardware in my stock cast iron 273 Adjustable rocker arms to improve oiling and to correct the 1.5 ratio. The bill would be $400 + freight.

Any advise on what rocker arms you would select for my mild build?

Use the 273 arms rebuilt and bushed.
Big thumbs up there! They are super durable. The rocker arm guys can rebuild and blue print them back into shape.

I hate even asking this question because the man at the rocker arm guys is so nice but is there anyone in the midwest that remanufactures the adjustable rocker arms?

For what you want to get - any arm will do. I'd use the 273s, and they are fine as is. Do the usual cleanup that would be part of a rebuild and they'll be fine. Your goals are not beyond stock parts. If you had a higher goal (bigger cam, stiffer springs, more rpm) that would be a different situation.

This is what I do. Always check spring/retainer clearance to the rocker through out travel. Even stock 340 rockers were clearanced for the 340 valve springs.

be sure to use the rocker shaft with banana grooves with 273 rockers. they are a good setup. we use them in our stocker engines and turn them 7300. no problems.
