Stop in for a cup of coffee

Here is what I found.

8-3/4" Axle Center Section Types

The 8-3/4" axle was available in three basic types. The types are differentiated by the pinion stem diameter....1-3/8", 1-3/4", 1-7/8". The choice of axle pinion assembly was determined based on the application.

1-3/8" small stem pinion (aka. '741')>
Carrier casting numbers: 1820657 (1957-1964), 2070741 (1964-1972). This assembly was typically used in low weight/low horsepower applications through low weight/medium horsepower and high weight/low horsepower applications. Pinion depth and bearing preload is set with shims. Differential bearing setting (ie. backlash ) is set with threaded adjusters.

1-3/4" large stem pinion (aka. '742')
Carrier casting numbers: 1634985 (1957-1964), 2070742 (~1961-1969). This assembly was replaced by a phase-in of the 1-7/8" pinion starting in the 1969 model year. 1970 RW (Plymouth and Dodge mid-size) were the last models to use the 1-3/4" which appeared in a 2881489 case. This assembly was typically used in high weight/medium horsepower applications through high weight/high horsepower applications. Pinion depth and bearing preload is set with shims. Differential bearing setting (ie. backlash ) is set with threaded adjusters.

1-7/8" tapered stem pinion (aka. '489')
Carrier casting numbers: 2881488, 2881489 (1969-1974). This assembly was introduced in 1969 and was phased-in to replace the 1-3/4" unit through 1970. Note: the 1-3/4" pinion also appeared in some '489' carriers during this period. By 1973, the '489' was the only unit available in passenger car applications. This assembly was typically used in high weight/medium horsepower applications through high weight/high horsepower applications. Pinion depth is set with shims, preload is set with a crush sleeve. Differential bearing setting (ie. backlash ) is set with threaded adjusters.

Good morning guys. The coffee shop never closes does it?
Good morning Ben, I think a good coffee shop is open 24/7 :coffee2:

Only when the SWAT mods raid it Ben.

Speak your mind Ray, someone been swatted ?

It's way too early to be awake! It sure is nice out this morning tho.
Same here this morning, 61 and calm :color:

SWAT mods... i like it..
:coffee2:

I'm taking a road trip to look some stuff up. Need to get about a little.

There's a company that works only with drive shafts here in Gothenburg so they can shorten one, no problem.

I realized that since I have a 727 and an 8 3/4 I should get a drive shaft from a bigger mopar. That way the spline would fit the trans and the rear U-joint would fit the diff. Right?

Oh, and I have a lead on a couple of 915 heads. Bare and with the 1.88" valves. Don't know what to pay, though.

I usually give $100 - $150 at most. I always assume that they need work and bring them to my head guy. He's found a few that aren't usable, but most of them are good... He goes through them and replaces whatever they need, ports them, installs hardened seats in the exhaust, and guides if necessary. Many people overlook the guides.

I just brought a set of heads to him from Eddy's engine that he bought rebuilt, and my head guy found that there were no hardened seats in them and the guides were worn and replaced them... Eddie has figured out not to buy an engine that is already built by someone else, but do it ourselves to it's done right.... You never know what short cuts people take when they sell you "rebuilt" parts/engines... They want to make as much $$$ as they can and don't want to put the money into it to do it right...

When I find good machine and trans guys, I stick with them. It's hard to find trustworthy people to do work for you... I just lost my trans guy to illness, he's never going to build another trans again... Incurable MS...

Only joking there Meme! You guys are awesome. Good morning also sorry for the bad wakeup and weak coffee!

Anders I know for sure the 727 yokes come in both sizes. You can also buy a u joint that has both sizes built into it like and adapter.

It looks purple to me, but I think that it designates gold members because I come up that color...

No, they are sitting in the truck "waiting" for more crew to show up...

I wish that I could get paid to sit on my *** for a few hours, and these guys are probably getting overtime for it...

I tell you what I felt like a kid in the candy store yesterday at the scrap yard. It is a scrap yard but has a few cars in it a maybe 10 from the fourties. and I was checking out a ramcharger there that was pretty complete. Really liked it.

You're so lucky to live in the US. This guy wants $300 for the pair. Stripped and cleaned.

The question is whether I'll be happier with a set of J heads or not ... They have different size chambers, right? The pic he sent me shows they are open chamber. no?

I think that all the 340/360 heads have the same size chambers. It depends on if they have been worked on and someone has milled the faces either to true/square them up or increase compression.

If they have been milled too much, then you will also have to mill the intake so it will fit and seal properly... Then use custom pushrods because the stock ones will be too long...
