They do make a mess when they fail. When I got the neon everything behind and under engine was coated with black oily gunk Thought it was a gasket at first. Kept cleaning till I found that thing on back of block was oozing every time it ran. Never blew out completely like that. Changed it and the new one went bad right away. (F’n Chinese ****) Changed again and it was OK. No more mess

When we raced SCCA the MG was on its way out. The Brits all wore these shirts that said “God save the MG,the Queen can take care of herself.” I actually liked the big wheel wells on the TRs (6 I think) vs the MG. Of course we were racing a Datsun 2000 so there is that. Hah!
