Fallen to one side, or not?
What’s hitting me the hardest is his wife called me because for some reason I was listed as his number 2 “favorite contact” and listed as his emergency contact in his phone. Sadly, we’d fell out of touch a few years back, he deployed to Qatar and than Afghanistan right before the infamous draw down in 2021. I talked to him a shortly before he left but lost his number when I updated my phone. My sincere condolences, both to you, as well as to his family.
Careful with that. You can’t “own” this, but this could be a slippery slope for someone without both feet planted firmly on the ground. What’s hitting me the hardest is his wife called me because for some reason I was listed as his number 2 “favorite contact” and listed as his emergency contact in his phone. Oh I’m not owning it. There’s nothing I could have done even Id known he was struggling. His wife said she’d tried to get him checked into an inpatient mental health facility and all they did was give him some meds and released him in a couple hours. 3 weeks later, he ended it. I would have done the same thing she did, which is what I told her on our 90 minute phone conversation. She called the Va hotline first, they had a therapist reach out to him, therapist couldn’t get him to talk, so he gave the wife the information for the health facility above, she took him that day.Careful with that. I’ve experienced three suicides, and I’ve learned that one needs to feel, and deal with, the grief, but you can’t own the guilt.
My heart goes out to you, and I wish you well.
Probably listed you first is because you have a good heart and hard to find a good person anymore.Oh I’m not owning it. There’s nothing I could have done even Id known he was struggling. I’m just confused as to why he listed me as his emergency contact above his wife. Doesn’t make sense.
Maybe. Just so sick of these calls. He makes number 9 now over the course of my career to suicide. 2 murdered, 3 killed in car accidents, 2 KIA in Iraq. That’s 16 too many lives cut short, only one of those 16 made it past 40.Probably listed you first is because you have a good heart and hard to find a good person anymore.
Think I’ve posted this before, but an M1 Garand has been on my Bucket (Gun) List ever since I was a kid, due to a good friend of my fathers that used to deer hunt with his. One of these days I’ll get off my *** and follow through on this.Anyway, thinking of a retirement gift to myself.
Do I want a S&W 29 the Dirty Harry revolver or an M1 garand. Hmmmm

Don't beat yourself up over this. I have a story along similar lines. I had a childhood friend I kept in touch with through the years, even after he moved to the Tampa area to help take care of his aging mother and step father. Soon after, his step father passed away. In December 2020, his mother also passed. Craig was always a gruff sort. Imagine me times ten. I would call him from time to time to check in and it was always the same thing. How social security had screwed him with lots of expletives thrown in. That really didn't bother me, but it was always very negative. The final straw for me was when I called sometime in December 2021 to wish him a Merry Christmas. F$#! Christmas was his response. I know he lost his mother the December prior, but she left him and his brother sitting pretty with a big inheritance, insurance money and properties she had inherited from her brother. So he had lots to be thankful for. So I decided to let sleeping dogs lie. I told Kitty that he could call me next. He never did. Then about halfway through 2022, I got a call from a mutual friend that Craig's brother had lost contact, driven to Tampa and found him dead in the house. Lots of cigarette butts, empty beer cans and "other substances" all around. He had a debilitating stroke several years prior, but had recovered, gotten in shape, quit all the bad habits and was doing well. I sorta beat myself up for a time after his death. But I realized it's not my bag of rocks to tote, so I put it down. What’s hitting me the hardest is his wife called me because for some reason I was listed as his number 2 “favorite contact” and listed as his emergency contact in his phone.
