I can't say if it's the original carpet or not without examining it, but the 3-piece split is necessary to get it to lay flat under that chrome bar for the fold-down seat. If it wasn't split like that, it would be a big lump where it bunched up and the bar couldn't lay flat. The Space Dusters with fold-down seats were done in a similar way.
