Streetability????

-
Hey guys, whatever YOUR definition of streetable is, my advice: Get it on the street!!!

If it weren't for my youngest son, I'd have been under the grass instead of on top of it a few months ago. My wife has to drive me until I am cleared by the Dr.

Get your stuff on the road, tune it, ENJOY it, before you can't!

Right. Go drive your car and ignore the crowd who continues to whine you can’t drive THAT on the street.

Well I, for one, am certainly glad you are still with us !!! I remember that scare, thank God your here!

The only thing I dislike about it is... the cost of 93 at the gas pump. But, I knew that when I started the build.

I actually went a step smaller on the cam than I planned, mainly because it was available. That worked out though since my compression ended up a little less than I thought it would.

I think it's time (after 15 years??) that we get a video of a different "yeller" on the street.... :poke:

Well, if **** goes well I can have the engine on the dyno in a month.

The cam finally showed up, right before I had to go out of town. Two weeks ago now. And maybe more. Maybe I can go home tomorrow but I’m not counting on that until I see what happens tomorrow.

But…I know I have at last count 5 or 6 engines, 7 if I get my friend to pull his head out of his butt that need to go across the pump before mine.

I was hoping to have my engine on the dyno by memorial weekend but that didn’t happen.

I’ll have to see how it goes.

EDIT: I just got a text and my engine oil showed up. I forgot that wasn’t there yet. So the brake in oil and engine oil is there, so is some more cam and assembly lube because I was running low.

I'd watch, like, and subscribe. Oh wait, I'm already subscribed.

I’m working on doing more videos. I still need a camera like 318WR said to get, but the used one I bought was a pig in a poke so I got my money back and haven’t had a chance to look for another one.

I need something too. I tried taking video today on my phone, but I cannot get it to go from there to my laptop.I used to use my wife's ipad, but its not so good anymore.

Also when I started my channel, I planned for my oldest to be sort of the Front Man. He is a lot better at getting things across than I am. But, he met a great young lady, married up and moved south....

80-100 mile trip. why such a short trip?
As to not exclude those who for health reason or other dont take trips further or longer than that....and i think stop in go in Inland California deserts and valleys like riverside, indio, palm desert , san Joaquin on the 15, 215, 60,99 are good measures of 100% streetabilty.

How hot does it get in jersey and how far do you drive by chance? I can take mine 300 miles for 5 hrs in 106 temps no problem.

I know that everybody has a different definition of streetable , but I am really happy so far with the combo in my '67 D100. My wife just drove us to town this morning to pick up some feed and straw for our chickens. This was her first time driving with the new motor. This truck has manual steering, manual disc brakes etc.

Her only complaints were the hot air on her legs ( There is a baseball sized hole in the floorboard, right above the header collector ) , and the responsiveness off idle and low speeds making it hard to take off without spinning. I mentioned how loud it is, but she said she likes it. She had a blast driving it!

It was in the lower 80s and the engine temp stayed below 1/2 on the stock gauge even when idling for quite some time.

It is, really, just as streetable as the old worn out 318 was. Just louder.

Here is my combo:

414" 340 based. 11.6:1, solid roller Howards 251/257 @050 .640/.640 106 ls installed at 105 ProComp heads with big ports, 1.32"x2.3" at opening (Plugged and moved pushrod holes ) Tubed bolt holes, Offset iron W2 rockers, Isky circle track valvesprings. Holley W2 Strip Dominator intake matched to the heads. I used W5 intake gaskets. Stock truck pan with rear sump from a later truck. Right now it just has generic sb truck headers on it.

The Sweptline trucks used the early short water pumps, because there is not much room up front. Instead, I made my own serpentine setup using Magnum timing cover, water pump, alternator, and highly whittled on brackets. Fan is a short magnum clutch type.
I am using the '67 style voltage regulator to control the Magnum alternator. Battery is in the bed. Generic aluminum radiator, and a Big Transmission cooler.

Transmission is the stock '67 727 with a Reverse pattern vb, shifted with the stock Dash mount shifter that I modified for the reverse shift pattern. 8" PTC converter. This converter actually cluncks into gear like a stock one, and feels stock around town. It jumps when you get on it though. Very streetable in my opinion.

Gearing is 4.56, but I have 31" tires, making it drive like 3.91s in a typical A body.

Carb is an early 5000 series Predator, I am still tuning on, but idles easily at 1000 RPM in gear. Time will tell if I can get any gas mileage out of it. Also, I hope to see how it runs in the 1/8th early summer.

I just wanted to point out that while everybody has a different idea of "Streetable", you would be surprised how well some combos take to the streets.

Also, this thing is far from what I would call well tuned yet. I have barely touched anything on it since I first got it running.

Anyhow, my wife and I like it, it ain't perfect, but it's just an old truck.., but it's our old truck!
Just for comparison to my avatar 408...you've likely got a bit more cyl head, certainly a higher lift cam with about the same duration at .050 (your roller vs my SFT), and similar 8" converter (mine stalls right at 5000). Other stuff is similar enough but I run a 4.10 with slicks. 11.0's at a taste under 120 mph.

So I'd say you're driving around in a high 10 sec capable sleeper of a truck (with the right suspension bite, etc)!! VERY well done and super cool.

And I 100% understand and agree on the streetability aspect. I've idled mine in Woodward Dream Cruise traffic for about 45 min in 93F ambient and driven it to/from cruises down here in Florida for about 40 mile round trips. Race season takes a break until September so it'll get switched over to street tires/mufflers shortly and be puttering around our area in Florida again very soon. That meets my definition of streetability and like yours, my wife also thinks it's a hoot to drive places! Really cool old truck you have!!

Cool ride you have! Thanks for the comparison.

in the summer it can get in the upper 90's here. the dart would stay cool at 100* temps.

how far do i drive? last year we did a week long 5000 mile road trip in the dart. cannonballed it home.. 1800 miles in two days. about 18 hours drive the first day and finished it off the second day.. this year we will be doing another road trip to the smokies.. not near as far as last year but i'm sure that will be over a thousand miles when all is said and done.. this weekend (if the waether holds out) we will be doing a 2 hour trip to a delership in PA for a mopar show.. on a more regular basis the car just cruises around town.. the point though, is at any given time it can hit the road for a 1000+ miles..

when i was young it was all about a car being fast and roudy, still "streetable" though.. they were fun and there is nothing wrong with guys that are into that.. for me these days its more about being able to get in the car, fill it with regular gas and hit the road to wherever i want to go and be able to cruise with traffic (80ish mph). if i can't do that then then i don't want the car, thats just my personal preference.. i wouldn't think twice (if i could get enough vacation time scheduled) to drive the dart across the country. hell i was only 1000 miles from ca. last year on our trip. i'm going from a 3.23 gear to 2.76 gears as soon and i have time to swap center sections to make it even more comfortable cruising with traffic on the highway..

And... that is great that your Dart does what you want! That is really the point. Build to your taste.

Sounds like we both have what we want. Here where I live the backroads are rough, and I need a pickup, for pick'n things up. I guarantee you, if I planned on driving for hours on end, I'd want something built more like your Dart, than my truck. On the other hand, if you wanted to haul some things that won't fit in your trunk, or to pull a trailer, you might like something similar to what I have.

Thanks for showing the other side of the coin.

Pop rivet a plate over the hole! Happy wife, happy life!!!! My wife has never driven my car, will ride in it to get ice cream, but has no interest in driving it. Even when it was more user friendly. She is afraid of damaging it, I tell her all the time, they are just cars and everything can be fixed. Still no interest. Everyone thinks I have this great sentimental attachment to it. I really don’t, I don’t want it destroyed, but it’s just a car. If I bend it, I would fix it. I really value the memories I made with it. The car is just a thing. We did go to our junior prom in it. As to streetable, I’d drive it anywhere. Looking to run Sick week maybe next year. Trying to talk Brian into running this on sickweek, but he’s too chicken…… :):)

Followed your trip. You have an amazing car!!

like i said.. just my personal preference , nothing wrong with either build..

we have this if i want to grab something too big for the dart... plans for now is to finish making it safe. have to do the brakes and cooling system.. have all the stuff just haven't had time to do it yet. i want to get the interior nice too..

down the road i want to put a OD unit in it and more gear with a posi. already has a 12 bolt wich is cool.. may drop it too but not sure if i want to or not yet.. still needs to be able to be a truck to a point.. i want to be able to drive it anywhere too.. i did drive it home 2 hours from carlisle. now that was interesting.. started out with no rear brakes.. by the time i got it home the brakes worked well.. lost a couple belts in two tires which made for a not so smooth ride..lol it made it though and it runs really well.

Can you guys share your YouTube channels? I’d be intrigued.

And love both sides of the coin talk. My car has never been fast. When it had 2.76s I drove it from MO to IN. That was awesome. Now with 3.92s I hate to leave town but love the street lights! Still streetable but not travelable lol. Someday I’d like a gear vendor and all that. But not at this time.
