i have a 1967 dart, coronet, charger factory service manual right here. it lists two 383s. 1. 383 STD. 6th Digit of G. 2. 383 HP.6th Digit H. On page 2. BUT the book is NOT clear as which engines was in which body's. the 383--440 engine section goes from page 9-48.....9-69. specification section,,, from page 9-98 to 9-101... the 383. has two Compession Ratios 9.2 and 10.0. 440- 10.1 to 1 only....shows 383 cam 256 degrees intake, 260 degrees exhaust. intake lift .425 ' ext ,435. but does NOT show a hotter cam. ill bet its wrong. i bet the 10.1 CR has a bigger cam. cause it shows a STD and HP. 440" but only one cam. BET thats wrong to. as we know some info from chrysler may be all ways right.

Moe,

In 1967, the 383/325 HP {B-Body}, 383/280 HP {A-Body} and 383/270 HP
2-Barrel all had the same 'lame' mild Hydraulic Camshaft.

Lift.................... .425"/.437"
Duration............ 256*/260*
Overlap............. 32*
Valve Springs... #134 lbs. {Valve Closed} ~ #208 lbs. {Valve Open}

Gino,

The 1st 'Proto-Type' ...

Was called the 383 'Cuda

It was a Notchback {Hardtop Coupe}, that was equipped with 10" Front Drum Brakes, and had a shipping weight of #3036 lbs.

The '1st Tests' were with the 383, a 727 Torque-Flite, and 3.55 Gears w/Sure Grip.

Reports were that the Barracuda 383 'easily' hit 14.60's @ 97 MPH.

While the Barracuda was 'quick' in the 1/4 Mile, it was poor in handling and Plymouth
was 'against' making the car any quicker.

And the 10" Drum Brakes were quickly canned {because of poor braking} in favor of the Disc Brakes.

The Front Disc Brakes added another +50 lbs. to the Front Suspension.

Gino,

This from late-1966.

Chevrolet was already talking about dropping a 427 in the Camaro.

Pontiac was in discussions with 'Hurst' {out source} to install a 428 in the Firebird.

Ford had the 428/355 HP in the Shelby Mustang, and was in the process of putting a
428 in the Mustang GT.

Mercury was in the beginning stages of putting a 427 'FE" in the Cougar GT.

Gino,

Car and Driver {December 1966}

mopar

As noted, Car & Driver stated that the 383/280 HP in the 1967 Barracuda 383 was 'purposely' rated at a low Horsepower
to get the 1967 Barracuda classed in a lower NHRA Class.

The skeptics were not so sure that the NHRA would accept a 280 Horsepower Rating, when the 'same' 383 4-Barrel was
rated at 325 HP in the Mopar B-Body cars.

Car & Driver could not find a {45 Horsepower} difference, and doubted whether the 'restrictive exhaust' could effect
the 383 that much.

Gino,

Things you might not have known,

Arlen Vanke designed the 'left side' {driver side} exhaust manifold for the 1967 Plymouth Barracuda 383.

The '2' Proto-Type Barracuda 383 cars
* Fastback, 4-Speed, w/3.91 Gears, Drum Brakes...........................{Shipping Weight; #3152 lbs.}
* Notchback, Automatic, w/3.55 Gears, Drum Brakes.......................{Shipping Weight; #3036 lbs.}

Gino,

* Dodge Dart GTS 383 ................................................ 458

* Ford Mustang GT 390 .......................................... 28,800

* Mercury Cougar GT 390 ......................................... 7412

* Pontiac Firebird 400 ............................................ 18,700

* Chevrolet Camaro SS 396 ...................................... 5141

What a great post!!!!
I wanted to correct one thing - all of the 67's were not bucket seats. We currently own a 67 383 S coupe built on April 6th 1967 and it is a bench seat 4 speed. We have the build sheet and it was decoded. It's a numbers matching(date codes all correct) restoration. The car is a bench seat, radio delete, tach car. I am currently moving and will send pictures when I unpack

Thanks again for the great post

Correct,

A handful of the 4-Speed {1967 Barracuda 383} cars were built with a bench seat.

'All' Automatic 383 cars were built with Bucket Seats and Console. A Column
shift was 'not' available, as there was no room for the column linkage in the
engine compartment.

I had a pair of the original A Body, Big Block, Manifolds. They were a little to restrictive for my .040 over 383. My '67 Dart GT is not a matching number car so I sold them for the exact amount that I paid for Schumacher Creative Services Ceramic Coated Headers. They do some nice work. Headers are beautiful, motor mount's perfect, torque strap a must. I had my steering column and spark plugs out already. Both headers slipped right in from the top. Spark plug access is no problem.
Haven't had my car tagged yet, did a few smoky burnout's, and I'm thinking of going with a RB Engine. Too much time on my hand's I think.

As for the left (Driver Side) exhaust manifold for the 1967 Barracuda 383, it was designed by Arlen Vanke.

Casting #2899002 (1967 Only)

I have a 1967 GTS 383 Dart. I have this manifold, but is it correct for the dart? Or just the Barracuda? I have seen several websites which say it is correct for the Barracuda. But I've seen no information on what part number the Dart had. I would assume they are the same? Thanks

Dudley, 2899002 is the same manifold for 67 Dart 383.

as to a "68 M-Code Barracuda" there WERE NO such production vehicles produced. in mid-1969 Plymouth put a 440 into their A-body and called the car a "Cuda." the "Cuda" was a special marketing/performance option package that year which included special stripping and a 340, or 383 engine. they produced around 360 440 equipped fastbacks and coupes in this configuration which had a "M" in the fifth position of the VIN code. the M-Code cars also did not have the same warranty coverage as the regular production cars. so as to Plymouth, 440 A-Bodies were called "Cudas" and they were only available in the 1969 model year.

Ike,

Here is the 1967 'H-Code' 383/280 HP 'specs'

* 10.0 -1 Compression Pistons
* Piston Height -.007 (Negative, below deck surface)

* Cylinder Heads Casting #2406516
* Closed-Chamber 73.5 CC
* Intake 2.08" x Exhaust 1.60"
* Valve Springs #134 lbs. (Valve Closed) - #208 lbs. (Valve Open)

* Camshaft (Hydraulic) .425 Intake / .437 Exhaust ~ 256*/260* Duration ~ 32* Overlap

* Carburetor (Plymouth) Carter AFB {525 CFM}
* Manual #4298 ~ 1 7/16" Primary ~ 1 9/16" Secondary ~ (Venturi's 1.186 x 1.313)
* Automatic #4299 ~ 1 7/16" Primary ~ 1 9/16" Secondary ~ (Venturi's 1.186 x 1.313)

Based on research and what I have on my 67 383 4 speed, 2780915 heads were also used but had the smaller 1.60" exhaust valves. And the 4299 carbs were used on 4 speeds sold in Canada.

All 67 383 A-Body's came with 516 heads, basically the same bowl as a 915 but with smaller valves, if your car has 915's then they have the larger valves. BTW, there were 457 Dart GTS's made, don't know where the 458 number came from?!?

That is correct......... '457' = 1967 Dart GTS 383 cars produced.

In 1967, the #2780915 Cylinder Heads with the 1.60" Exhaust Valves could be
found on the following >
* 440/350 HP > Chrysler > Newport, Newport Custom, 300, New Yorker, Imperial and Town & Country Station Wagons
* 440/350 HP > Plymouth > Fury {I, II and III} Station Wagons 'only'.
* 440/350 HP > Dodge > Monaco and Polara series

The #2780915 '440 HP' Cylinder Heads came thru with the 1.74" Exhaust Valves
