Off-duty cop shocked by bystanders' actions at horrific crash

A deadly crash on Monday left an off-duty cop with questions about the behavior of other witnesses

DALLAS — A deadly crash on Monday left a witness with questions about the behavior of other witnesses.
An off-duty Dallas police officer was first on the scene and says he's upset because of what he saw in the car and because he was one of the only witnesses who tried to save the victims.
“That’s when I started asking the gentleman in a white shirt who was standing there amongst the crowd of all these people, ‘Is there any way…does anybody have fire extinguishers? Just get me fire extinguishers,’” said Williams. “In my peripheral vision, in addition within a very close distance, you see people filming with their cell phones,” said Williams. “That’s what you see — a person’s actually dying in front of their eyes, and rather than you making it a priority, putting yourself in the role of a first responder, just to try to help out in some way, you choose your priority to be filming somebody’s death.”

This is horrifying! I can put my feelings about this into words.

under the same law that protects people acting as "good Samaritans" there should be a reversal applied

anyone remember the Seinfeld episode?
a chunky guy gets carjacked, the gang sees it, and makes jokes about it and then gets charged

that's the way it should be

in a society there are only 2 sides
you are either part of the problem or part of the solution

somebody raised them that way , fixing society requires a lot of looking in the mirror and everybody wants to point at the other guy .

Well, it's happened before, and likely to happen again. What do you expect us to say? I'll admit, I don't have a vehicle full of "response equipment" to care for someone else.

If I thought I had the strength or skill I would be compelled to help, but there's an amazing amount of people who have absolutely no mechanical skills at all

It is sad sack, when people remain detached & desensitized. I have been helped,& have helped. Depends on the situation, at least offer to call for help. Geez.

So, because you don't have what ever is needed to help, it's OK to just stand there and record two people burning to death? That's appalling.

I am no first responder, nor am I a hero, but I have to say I would have gotten 3rd degree burns trying to help them get out.

.

Precisely. I can't imagine just standing there, watching, without, at least trying to help, much less recording their deaths.

It looks like one of those scumbags tried to post their video on facebook, and it was taken down. If that's indeed what happened, kudos to FB for showing a shred of decency.

On the flip side-- if you help them -- then later on they sue you for injuries . There are a couple of cases in Kansas going on right now for similar actions.

First off, I'll take that risk, and demand a trial by jury.

Secondly, most states have a "Good Samaritan" law on the books that protect people from such law suits.

I'm sorry, Lawrence, but I can see no excuse for complete inaction in a life threatening situation.

Welcome to the new ME world. Society is now all about ME.

That's it in a nutshell unfortunately.

I recently had a distant relative (youngster about 26)down on his luck and had come to town after family had offered to help. I jumped thru some hoops pulling strings and trying to get him a job where I work (Halliburton) and arranged an interview, it was an entry level position and he would have started at $17hr. He couldn't even motivate himself enough to contact the supervisor. My brother did the same where he works @ Southwestern Bell with an even better entry level job that started at around $24hr. he actually took the test, passed it and would have started in 3 weeks. What's he do? Goes to Az.to be with his stripper girlfriend. While here my brother gave him a car (running 94' Cadillac) I bought him tires and a new belt. One day I needed some help moving some stuff and he actually had the nerve to ask me what I was going to pay him. I read him the riot act about how his generation is all about WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM. I told him have you ever heard of just helping somebody without having your hand out.I was so pissed and washed my hands of him. Good Riddance!!!

This, unfortunately is what a lot of the world has turned into.

That would not sway me. If I do not help them in this life, I will have a much higher power to answer to in the next.

Goodness, are the jobs still open???????

And I would sure have to try something to help the people!

Last time I ran into that supervisor job was still open, I have told two others about the position. A niece that's always complaining about her job at an insurance company with ironically no insurance and lousy benefits, she never contacted him and my hairlady that complains about her no benefit job, she never contacted him either. I'm embarrassed whenever I see him now and just shrug my shoulders and give him the old adage about Leading a horse to water.

I know the unknown and fear of change can compell people to stay in their comfort zone but wake up people, step outside the zone and improve your quality of life.

No Frankie, don't get your God Dammed pious on the prowl. I'm not condoning this.

It sure sounds like it. Perhaps you should reread what you posted.

....and there's no need for the language, tough guy, this isn't N&P. Save you ire for the Shark Tank.

I think that this is a big part of it. (Besides the whole "ME" mentality).

When a criminal can fall through a skylight while trying to break into a house, fall on a counter and get cut by a knife, then sue and win against the homeowner in court, makes the public a little hesitant to step in and get involved.

I'm not condoning this, but the court system today is a joke. O.J. Simpson, Trevon Martin, Casey Anthony, etc.... Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Amanda Bynes, Justin Beiber, all get more "second chances" than any normal citizen has...

I think it's unfortunate that one would think of themselves at such a crucial moment in someone else's life.

But, it is what we have become as a nation.

Fortunately, there are still many people who would jump right in and help without a second thought.

There is a dire need to beat into the thick skulls of our youth the fact that LIFE IS NOT DIGITAL!!!!!!

Another side of this is all the genius level people doing illegal things and putting it on the internet for everyone, including LEO, to view. The guy running from the police on his motorcycle a few weeks ago is a perfect example. The po-po went and arrested the knucklehead. There's good with the bad from this stuff.

Does anyone have a legal responsibility to get involved, no. Should people try to help, yes. Nobody here knows how engulfed the car was when this was occurring. Is it creepy that people were recording it... yep. I think I know that area, it's SW Dallas IIRC, and nothing surprises me anymore.

I could maybe understand natural instincts to either act or freeze in a situation like that but think it is absolutely wrong when your first thought is to record it.

I am so lucky and proud to know that any of my three son's would be in there helping as they have done before at an accident scene.

I wish I knew why others won't.
