The Torqueflight "whine"

Every car/truck I've ever owned with a Torqueflight tranny in it, be it a 904, 727 or 518 has had a distinctive "whine". You can hear it on acceleration, and also on decelleration.

What it is that makes that sound?
 
My 01 Dakota will whine in neutral when it has sat for more then a couple of days...
 
It's the planetary gear sets. Since they are only used in first and second the motivation to reduce that noise wasn't very compelling.
 
In fact the diesel trucks have a straight cut set of planetaries in the overdrive unit. You can't hear them in a diesel truck but put that set behind a gas motor (I have them in my Dakota) and you can hear them sing. The V10's have the same 5 pinion set as the diesel but they are helical cut gears to cut down on the noise.
