This will make you think about where your food comes from

You will find when you look it up 2-4-D is close but Round Up is far from Agent Orange. 2-4-D has been in use for a long time and it is on golf course lawns and people use it for a nice weed free lawn. Google is our friend and by searching we become smarter than big brother wants us to be. I know several Nam Vets that were affected by it and some that committed suicide because of cancer diagnosis linked to the Orange.
I know those that died from Cancer caused by agent orange. I know a person that worked on golf course and sprayed a lot of Round up that it killed her at age 50. There has been a big law suit over Round Up, more to follow. I do not take everything Google throws out as fact! Maybe RondUP is as people friendly as a warm glass of milk, but I doubt it.

Round Up cannot be used on a golf course as it kills broadleaf plants meaning it kills grass along with weeds. The 2-4-D does not kill grass and is for golf course use and also on wheat as it wont kill grass just the weeds. Believe as you wish I farm now and was raised on a family farm and use both of the mentioned chemicals.

NOT to argue, but yes to argue. lol I have worked on several courses, and YES they sprayed around the trees that they did not wish to weed eat around. With RondUP! They also sprayed around the ponds, and ditches. Yes the purpose was to kill all vegetation! Yes like you I understand the difference in herbicides.
I truly hope I am wrong about RoundUp and it being a carcinogen. I have used it plenty over the decades. Sorry
I stand by my opinion of Agent Orange.
Back to the original subject!!

I,m to old to remember the original subject. What were we talking about? lol

I'm sure some of them do it cause they feel like they have to.
Kids and democrats these days think "have to" is a bad thing, that's why they dont wanna work...so they make it your "have to" pay for them, student loans,welfare,programs..

Think about it like this for a second... 'don't want to work and want to tell everybody else where its at'.... bunch of know-it-alls, right? like teenagers... know it all loud mouths that only know how to ***** and moan, never content.

Can you please leave politics and personal judgement of others out of it?

This thread is in itself is something 'a quote/opinion', from a politican, passed onto us for our opinion which yields to a degree or 3...a level of judgement.

I am so very sorry if I hurt your feeling or disturbed your ebonflow.

Some old boy and his family who haven't sold out and are trying to keep the "LAND" in the family.
These folks Have put a life time of the hard work into keeping this land pristine and profitable for his family. They make money. They adapt. It's about the land. These people are real conservationists as are most Montana ranchers that I know.
I understand you are helping here Fred. Thanks for the bump.

"IT" What is IT? It's a discussion. A discussion about people and politics.
Didn`t his start about calves hitting the ground , wet , and in below freezing temperature ? Not politics, don`t get me started there !!

True, I am guilty of making comments in an open forum as here, that can be construed by some as political. Politics belong in the political forum, where it quickly goes to chit!! Problem is everything that happens in this world is in some shape, manner or form touched by govn't and their policies!
Going back to the farm, agriculture, we were talking herbicides. Other than the discussion of its uses, we cold talk pre emerge, post emerge, the vaiou new broadleaf ones on the market, the genetic engineering to be able to incorporate resistance to Round up in the soybean plant, the possible ways it could affect livestock and humans, but we old be talking politics petty soon after! So I won't go there!
We can argue calving dates for Montana, vs Ok. vs. SE Texas. Yep people n different parts of this country figure out what work for them, an it is not always when the temp is above freezing.
The original subject was talking about where our food comes from, and from there we discuss how
Modern" generations have progressed into what they are. The immediate gratification, pre prepared, fast food folk. We have generations that can not read a road map, can not use a clutch, runs up a $60,000 college ed. debt,( who will pay it off), would die riding down the road without AC, the list is very long.
How about a young man that is 27 has two degrees, he and is wife make $145,000 gross, will call mom every week for advice on something, and just as quick will tell her how she knows nothing, he knows it all, and her advice is totally wrong. A young couple that can only grill or eat out, or eat lunch provided at work. They already had a small freezer but bought a new big one other day. Why? Somoene gave them some venison. Both hard working, very intelligent kids. BUT.....................lol

I'm glad I raise all my own meat products, vast majority of the vegetables and can my food.

Spent the evening cutting up a whitetail. Here in about 8 hours I’ll be walking back into the woods with my Remington 870 in hand. We have a freezer full of crappie, largemouth, and catfish. As well as 6 pheasants. Wild game is a resource that the majority of Americans will never take advantage of and it can greatly reduce the factory farming that is going on in this country.

Hunting, unfortunately, is also going the way of the dodo. See it every year with the NYS DEC claiming harvests are down.

The older guys like myself and older are heading out in the woods. The younger guys not so much.

An age of self reliance is disappearing. Excuses abound, from not enough meat processors (learn to butcher your own) to being too expensive to buy the gear, etc.

To man, most of my neighbors have acreage.

I'm the only one who plants a vegetable garden. To a man, most ***** about food prices.

I heard excuses, their, too. "The soil sucks," (don't take the time to build it up) to "it takes too long to build a raised bed," to "it costs too much to buy jars and canners," etc.

Wanna see the state of farming in America? Take a look at the all the empty Grange halls.

So true ramenth. I lived 39 years in rural Missouri before I wound up here in the "piney woods" of SE Texas. We lve in a count with on traffic light, but it is basically a bedroom county. People drive an hour or more to goo job in Houston. The county is largely a national forrest. Logging is a big- ish business when prices are decent. Cattle production is scattered. When I lived in SW Missouri there was 100 times more cattle there than right here. However I would never dream of telling any local ranchers theirs is not bigger and better than anywhere else, even though they know the truth! lol
We has a big garden. Like ramenth said, all the neighbors have 10 ac to several hundred or so, but they have NO garden.. Beef in the freezer though. Now IF we want to can the vegs and GIVE it to them, they like that, but they never seem to be able to return the jars!! So we don't anymore.
People for the most part back in rural Missouri hunted deer for the meat. Here it is urbanites out of Houston that have a "deer lease". A weekend place out in the fresh air, to party, drink, and that fall maybe get a buck with a big rack. Back home it was drive out to the edge and shoot one, doe or buck field dress it, and take it to one of many processors. No one had a hunting cabin anywhere.
I still say, as the public grows away from its rural roots, and away from God Almighty, it is not good, not progress, and does nothing to help our society as to the core of humanity. So GPS and landing on Mars is progress!??? lol

All of my friends, old coworkers tell me that I'm the only one they know that is so self sufficient that could actually live off grid. They think just because I have a well with back up manual pump, cattle, chickens and a garden. We used to raise hogs as well, but not so much now, they all say if the shtf they will all be coming to my farm. I tell them if you show up without a way to feed yourselves you better bring a gun and intentions to take mine and know I'm armed as well and reload all my own ammo. Cause I ain't giving it up to anyone. I took the time, effort and forethought to be ready for whatever and able to feed my family no matter what. Not to say I'm not willing to help anyone else out, but dont think I am going to watch them gobble up my food and water and watch my family go without a single thing.

I see hope in the hunting community. Joe Rogan is an absolute giant in the community of young men. He has more people listening to his podcast than there are watching prime time cnn. He is an avid bow hunter and mentions hunting in nearly all of his podcast. He also has hunters on his show very often. I see a ton of people on social media saying they are getting into hunting simply because of people like Joe. I do not expect a 180 in hunting license sales but I expect to see the decline slow down.

I know I am a young man and I have been hunting since I was old enough to shoot a 22 and I can not imagine myself not hunting.

Three ways to get to hunt: lease, permission from someone ( usually a relative), or Fed./State land. I left off illegal road hunting or poaching!
The average city person does not understand the deer population must be thinned out or disease will destroy them all.

I've been growing veggies without any chemicals for 40 years, a few weeds and some pesky bugs don't bother me a bit. While the produce may not be picture perfect it sure tastes good. We also eat a lot wild game. Just filled the freezer up with a couple nice does last week. Making a bunch of venison Italian sausage tonight. Getting hungry just thinking about it ;)

Went outside to check on my cattle. My neighbors have this sickly heifer and a large sheep that they let their pit bull.....yes, put bull and half wolf husky constantly chase and harass their livestock. I've told them it's not good to allow a pair of dogs pack mentality towards their livestock. Well today the dog had dug under my fence into my orchard and was coming at me aggressively to attack. What that 40 pound pit didn't see in his haste to attack me was my 156 pound great Dane standing on the hill behind me. I look to my dog and just point to the pit and tell his trigger word "see". He exploded into protection mode and rolled that pit down the road harshly. The pit tried to defend itself against him, but that only made it worse for him. Once goliath has him down and subdued he just held it down until I told him go. He walked away, l let the dog make his way back under the fence limping. Walked over to the owners and told them next time I will drop the dog with my rifle. Keep it off your livestock, in your own yard or it will be the end for it. I've had this problem before with other stray dogs biting my cattles legs up. Sheriff told me point blank shoot the dogs or trap them and we will euthanize them ourselves. Its not an easy thing to do, I love all animals. And I don't blame the dog for being a dog. But I do hold the owner responsible and if that means their dog gets put down. Oh well.

Both here and back in Missouri in cattle, ANY dog out in a pasture will generally get shot no matter. We have Boer goats too and we have a big Ridgeback something that guards them. We had problem before him, with dogs running loose, usually pit bull types, get ahold of one and tore its ear off.
Loose running dogs need to stay on their own property, and know not to chase any livstock, harass livestock. I love good dogs but they have to stay out of neighbors pastures or else they could get shot. Your neighbor is an idiot!

Yeah I imagine after my conversation with them today they know I am not joking or playing games. I value my cattle heavily. I have been looking at livestock guardian dogs alot lately to put out in the pasture with my cattle. Our dane is a great dog, but cant live outdoors in the cold weather. Not bred for that. But an lgd, that's what they're purpose is. My wife agrees, its just logical to go that route. A $500 dog is an investment to keep thousands of dollars in livestock safe. I have been wanting to hold off getting one until we get past the winter as I want to get it as a puppy to train it to my needs. And I couldn't sleep at night thinking a little new puppy is outdoors cold. Lol. I'm an animal softy. I know it would be okay as it would have access to multiple sheds, shops and hay lofts.

The Mexican burro is used heavily for guarding cattle. They will protect cattle from coyotes dogs, probably could even do well against a mountain lion. Get by on little. Back in Mo, and here too, a burros $25 at a sale barn. Individuals seem to price them at $1-200 ! Ropers use them to trim heel horses. Otherwise good for nothing.
That big Ridgeback eats like a horse. She has to give him smoked pig ear snacks too. I bet he costs us $80 a month!!!!! Luckily a neighbor gave him to us as a pup. They can sell for $1000-1500! lol
