What thread sealant would you recommend for exhaust manifold studs. Appreciate the guidance.

I do just like Rug said. I use red high temp RTV going into the head, but I use Permatex ceramic brake grease on the outside threads, simply because anti seize has a reputation of getting everywhere and the brake grease stays where you apply it. lol It also has a maximum temp of 3000F so it's not going anywhere. I slob it on pretty good.

another vote for p-tex/loc-tite thread sealer.

buy the big tube, you'll wind up using it on a lot more things than you think!

and 100% some variant of anti-seize on the nut side.

Is it long or short side of the stud in the engine? Thanks

Tried to install a couple before I left town. Quickly. Didn't notice the different threads. Took the better route and decided to take my time... and ask the experts. Appreciate the information

It's worth your time (now) and trouble (less of it now and later) to get the right stuff. The wrong stuff will not seal and/or will get pushed into the cooling system and clog the works. The right stuff is Loctite № 542 or № 592.

Read this (also, this, and this). Note that it is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and intake-to-exhaust junctions.

Has anyone used anything that doesn't work?

I've used proper thread sealant, rtv, teflon pipe sealant for plumbing, teflon tape, etc. Everything I've used has worked fine. I think this is one of those instances where you don't need to overthink it. Use what you've got and move on to something more important.

What gaskets would you recommend? I have seen a thicker gasket on a YouTube video to close the gap as the manifolds shift etc.

The ones you get to if you click the link that says "Good gaskets" in post #17 of this thread we're in right now. You might have to click through another link from the first link, I forget.
