My 340 has no timing indicator on the front cover. Was this a bolt on piece? Or has some one swapped out the original? No sign of breakage or grinding.

And if it is a bolt on piece, where would you get one?

should be part of the timing chain cover...

did you look on both side?...

70 was the switch over year...it should be on the driver side...

also look behind the radiator hose on the passenger side...might have wrong cover on it.

The engine is out and on the stand. No indicator. I'll have to get the serial # to make sure which cover I need to get. :-?

what water pump does it have, iron or aluminum?

it could have a pre 70 balancer and be able to use the early bolt on timing tab, regardless of water pump, same goes for old pump on 70-up cover/balancer.

find true tdc and see which side the timing mark on the balancer ends up.

Odds are it was the one that bolted on with the bottom two bolts of the water pump. If you plan to use an after market vibration damper, you would need a later timing chain cover and a water pump with the inlet hose on the right side. If you are restoring then you need the bolt on pointer or the correct timing chain cover with the marks cast on the right side. I can help you with either option.

I believe the '68 and earlier small blocks had the bolt on tab which had the marks on the passenger's side. Only available used. The '70 and up cover, which has marks on the driver's side, is reproduced.
