I've had the top and bottom boxes since about 1975, the middle box 1985. I started to buy a new Craftsman top box, but didn't want to stop using the old Mac box. I went to work for Robertshaw Controls in 1972 and bought a Craftsman box and tools with my first paycheck for $113. I probably still have 95% of those tools.
I decided to fix up some metal cabinets instead of buying a new toolbox. These metal cabinets came out of the house I grew up in. I snagged them when my mother decided to update the kitchen. I just keep the bigger tools in the metal cabinets.

Thought I'd share the picture of my Daughter's 6th birthday present. She told me it was even better than the Barbie camper her brother got her. Her Mom got her some pink tools too. Now she is ready for her own A body!

You can never have enough storage for your tools. I don't see piles of tools on your bench. See, it works! LOL

He moved the boxes together so you wouldn't see all the stuff on the bench. LOL

My 7yr old didn't want to clean it but did. His sister always like cleaning the box and waxing it. But she liked the money in the box that she got to keep for cleaning it.I always put my lose chance in it) The boy just doesn't care about the money yet?? He will catch on:burnout::burnout:

I was given some old rusty tool boxes last summer and tried my hand at rust removal by electrolysis. I think they come out pretty good. None of them had trays, so I recently made trays for all of them. The one I keep in the Duster needed a little dressing up...

There were five boxes total that I was able to salvage, plus one that was too far gone - but it still lives on and will be used on a rat rod...

Clyher, where did you get the hinges? I tried to get a couple replacements from Sears and they cost as much as their cheapest box.

68 - most of the hinges were ok. There were two boxes that the hinges were froze up on, but after a bath in the electrolysis the hinges were freed up! You can get long lengths of piano hinge from woodworking supply places though that you just cut to length with sheet metal shears.

There's an interesting thing I noticed thru 4 decades of hiring and firing mechanics...

A great mechanic can have a POS tool box,, and still be a great mechanic..

A shitty mechanic can have a fabulous box,, and still be a shitty mechanic...

There's a moral there somewhere.. lol

68 - no problem, I suffer from them myself more than I care to admit!
I found some suitable replacements on eBay for about $3 each and a couple bucks shipping. They were listed as a draw pull latch, model E201. I think I got them from an RV sales place on eBay. They are not identical, they have a lock loop on them, but they are the same dimensions and will attach in the same holes the originals came from.

340, that is a nice looking set up you have there!

this thread is putting me to shame, I need to buff out or possibly re-paint my tool boxes.

it might be cool to re-paint in base coat clear coat.

Cant see in the pic but my toolboxes have some overspray from the many times I turned the shop into a paint booth. :???:

This is my fathers tool box he has been using since the late fifties. He built and owned midget race cars here in the Midwest. Top box is Snap On I'm not sure of the rest. I am restoring my Dart Sport in his garage which has everything I need except good heat.

I started in the business 25 years ago. The 1700 series was one of the first boxes to get roller drawer slides. Your box is 25+ years old I would bet. The bottom drawer was great for long bars and extensions as well as anything else. The next series box put a full length drawer at the top for all your drive tools. I used to demo the 1700 by opening the bottom drawer and standing inside. The Snap On dealer damaged a few boxes trying the same thing. LOL

My tool cart and some tools, started my collection last summer after being out on my own for a while, probably trading it in on the new model Mac cart by summer or on a new smaller box, who knows!
