Top end popping noise

Everything's back together and seemingly running strong, thanks for the help everyone! Took longer than what I wanted but life and waiting for parts got in the way. I ended up getting the matching retainers from Hughes because those retainers I got from ebay were nowhere near being correct. When hitting the cylinders with compressed air while I was replacing the springs/retainers ALL of the exhaust valves leaked. Intake valves sealed just fine.

Which is kinda surprising to me because I lapped all the valves when I was assembling this engine awhile back and they seemed to seal up on the bench when spraying the ports with wd-40. It's just one of those things I'm going to have to save for some aftermarket heads to fix that problem because I don't want to spend any money getting a valve job on stock magnum heads.

I'm surprised all the exhausts leaked. Sometimes you have to smack them a bit to get the canon off of them.

Also, most people don't realize that when you shut the engine down the valves actually warp a bit. I'm talking about the exhaust valves that are open when the engine shuts down. Sometimes an intake will do it too.

Once the engine starts and the valves get some heat in them they seal back up.

To have all of them leak is not a good sign.

It may be just worn guides. Lapping with worn guides does not mean you get a good seal, as the valves may sit cocked a tiny bit when the springs are finally installed. Glad to hear it is running again!
