Tragedy doesn't bode well For Craigslist

-
My parents both in their 70's yesterday told me they wanted to sell an extra vehicle they have and were worried about this type of scenario.

I told them to just bring it over to my house with the title and I would list it and take care of the sale myself so they don't have to worry and I don't have to worry about them.

Great Idea. Good Son !!

I've done tons of craigslist transactions, I'm 6ft 250lbs, and I still always bring somebody with me!

I've never had any problems except one time. Saw a car listed for sale, went and looked at it, made an agreement with the seller, and told him I'd be back Friday morning to pick it up. All was good! Friday morning I hooked up the trailer and started heading his way. I gave him a call to let him know I was on the way and he didn't answer. So I left a message. I continue driving. About 45min later, when I was almost there, he calls me back furious! Here's roughly what he said, "What the hell are you trying to pull?! You better not step outta your truck into my drive way or my wife will shoot you! I've already called her and told her to be ready!". I was completely stunned! Apparently he forgot I told him I would be back Friday to pick up the car, and went into work. When he received my message that I was on the way, he assumed I was coming to rob him and rape his wife!

That guy sounded like a goof ball. And they are out there. Bad part is, they think they are "normal" LOL!#-o

It's a sad story and it's true, they're a lot of bad people in the world preying on the weak or trusting. This old couple thought they were going to go buy their dream car to cruise around in their golden years and ended up dead. There's a special place in hell for people that do this kind of thing.

I buy and sell on Craigslist on a weekly basis, you just have to be careful. Try to meet in a public place, there's a police station right up the street from me and their parking lot is always open and has surveillance equipment. If someone doesn't want to meet me there, I back away from the deal.

Not uncommon here for people to get robbed when answering CL ads selling/buying Apple phones and Macbooks........

Virginia Beach Police just came out on the television saying they are opening up all their precinct lobbies for anyone wanting to complete an online transaction such as Craigslist. Great idea!!!!

When I bought my last car from Craigslist, it was out of state and gathering information was kind of funny. The seller was being overly cautious and I was being overly cautious and neither one of us wanted to disclose too much information. I finally emailed him and said we really need to talk on the phone so we can plan. We set up to meet in a Burger King parking lot in the middle of the day. I planned ahead of time with Wells Fargo and "ordered" the cash at that specific bank branch (They don't always keep a lot of cash on hand). Met the seller at the bank the next day to give him the money and got the title.

I've always been a little skeptical and always err on the side of caution when it comes to this.

Oh...and I also have a CCW permit...just in case. Works well in state, but not so well when traveling.

My dad buys dead cars and get then running and sells them on cl. He has sold over 100 cars this way with only one incident.

He sold a car to someone. No issues during the transaction and heard nothing for a few months. My parents took off Italy and at the time I was 16 and home alone. I'm sitting on my couch watching tv when I hear someone knocking on the door at about midnight. I grab my shotgun that I always kept around when my parents were on trips and looked through the window to see two cops. I answer the door and they begin telling me that our neighbor called because he saw a man walking around our home trying to open windows and doors. It scared me to death. I couldn't imagine what would have happened if I glanced at a window and saw some dude trying to break in.

Other then that the other dozens of times have gone off without a hitch and has even lead to some friendships.
