he 3.23 gears mean you probably should have less converter than Dusty, maybe 2800, which should be easy behind a 440.
maybe in 1975 but today that just isn't true.

Wow, So I'm seeing a lot of info here. I know nothing about converters but now I feel like I have an idea. I will have to call one of those companies.
My setup (in full restoration.)
69 Dart GT, 440 10 1/2 compression. Common Mopar purple camshaft. Schummacher block hugger headers and full dual exhaust. 727 and 8 3/4 Sure Grip with 323s. Mini tubbed. Stock bodied with 6 pt cage and frame connectors. mostly for street driving with maybe an occasional trip down the track.
Anyone have an idea?
Converters and cam numbers alike, serve only to confuse the hell out of me
i'd call one of or even all three of the guys above and see who you feel most comfortable with...
up till about 2005ish i'd buy a stock high stall or even a cheap 3000 stall out of the magazines....
when i bought my yellow dart back it had a leaky front trans seal and a turbo action or something converter.. i knew that trans had been in there for years so i had a friend build me another 904. while gathering parts i had another buddy that was racing his 72 cuda in a 12.0 class.. he told me about his experience with a dynamic converter.. i was on the fense because his car was way more race oreniated then mine and the converter was expensive. i gave them a call and explained to them that i was driving the car mostly and while it would see the track that i wanted the best street manners... with the combo in that car he recommebded a 9.5" unit that would flash to about 3800 rpm.. i thought he was nuts and questioned him about it... he said you'll be fine. it won't generate too much heat and be prefectally driveable... i said ok and ordered it..
fast forward a month or two. new trans and converter is in and holy ****. it cruised around like a stock converter and when you floored it the thing just took off like a bat out of hell.... at the track it was like getting shot out of a cannon. i'd foot brake it to 3000rpm easily (could have gone higher) but 3k was enough. car didn't move at all. no problem with it pushing against the brakes. it didn't do that with the other converter. light turned green and the freaking thing would launch like you wouldn't believe.
funny story about the converter switch.. the guy that did my trans is a good friend that i've know since my teens.. he had driven the car quite a few times since i had gotten it back. after the trans and converter swap i take it to the dealer he works so he can align it.. he always test drove it to be sure it was right after he was finished.. this time he comes back cursing me out. says, holy ****, what the **** did you do tot that car? i asked why? what haoppened.. ha says he stomped on the throttle as usual and almost ended up on someones front lawn ..lol we still laugh about that.. when i bought that converter he thought i was nuts spending that much for one... guess who bught one a few months later...
when putting our current dart together with a mild motor and only a 2.94/3.23 gear i asked him to grab me a stock high stall converter while he had my 904. he says buy another dynamic converter now or you'll kick yourself for not doing so.. what did i do? i picked up the phone and called sean at dynamic and order it up.. they are not cheap by any means but boy do they work..
like i said. call all three places and see who you feel most comfortable with.. i have had a couple of dynamic converters as atleast 3 friends who all loved them.. i also have a couple friends that have run ultimate converters and they loved it.. i don't have any experience with PTC but i see them mentioned quite a bit and everyone seems happy with them that have used them..
I have the almost identical build as yours Except .030 stock replacement pistons and my 1341 regrind is .535 lift (1.6 ratio). 3.55 gears in a b-body. 26 inch tall tires.Currently running a 360 Magnum with 904, 8.25 rear with 3.73 suregrip and 255 60 15 tires. With the help of yall i settled on the Oregon 1341: 218/224 @ .050”, 270/276 adv, .482”/.482” lift, 110 sep Cam grind. which ill be running with the hughes valve spring kit, Dougs longtube headers, air gap intake, and a 650 AVS2 carburetor.
Ken at Oregon said This one was right on the top end of not needing a stall converter but im wondering if a stall would make it better.
I'm after seat of the pants power and if paying extra for a stall will give me more then im all for it. Currently it has the stock converter, im assuming it is not a factory "high stall"
So all that being said, what would y'all recommend converter wise? The car isnt a drag car, i drive it on the street, but i drive it pretty aggressively and like to have fun. The local cops dont mind too much as long as you keep it between the ditches either![]()
Man.. i ordered a 3400.. now i'm kinda wishing i had gone bigger![]()
i'm sure you'll like it. this was the yellow cars build.. 3.91 gear too.. ran it with a 26x9 14" hoosier QTP.

Where is the rest of it?![]()
damn.. almost into the 11's with that is impressive.think that was it.. it was:
MP 9.5:1 short block when they still sold them. came with a 508/292 mp purple cam.
eddy heads
rpm non air gap intake.
i ran a msd RTR dist.
tti headers
3" exhaust
904 trans
3.91 8 3/4 rear.
best the car ran was a 12.17 at liek 108.9 mph. i'm sure it had more in ot but i never really played with it much/ it was more a street cruiser.
Hmm...my rockers are 1.6 ratio too. All stock magnums are right? So my lift would be the same as yours?I have the almost identical build as yours Except .030 stock replacement pistons and my 1341 regrind is .535 lift (1.6 ratio). 3.55 gears in a b-body. 26 inch tall tires.
I was running a 904 Torqueflite Patty 340 converter at about 2400 stall. I had Edge Racing converters (Andre) custom build me a 3200 stall converter and very happy. Good price too!! Not a huge difference from the 2400 stall but definitely works better with the cam. Mild manners on the highway and around town but really co mes on when hammered and I like to drive the way you do.
Look at your cam sheet. It will show your lift at 1.5 and 1.6. I believe the lift stated in your first post is for 1.5. I am using the Hughes springs as well. I measured for pushrods and was able to reuse the stock units. I am running old style EQ heads and .028 head gasket so you should check.Hmm...my rockers are 1.6 ratio too. I havent gotten my cam back yet, but that is the grind number i gave ken and we decided to make it 110 LSA instead of 112.Look at your cam sheet. It will show your lift at 1.5 and 1.6. Edit....yes factory magnum rockers are 1.6.

Sorry man. Disregard my comment. My grind is 1634. Very similar 218/224 270/276 110 with 525/535 lift. The lift you listed is correct.I havent gotten my cam back yet, but that is the grind number i gave ken and we decided to make it 110 LSA instead of 112.
That's what she said.now i'm kinda wishing i had gone bigger![]()
Lol, yeah call wasiLet's not! lol, just kidding. This thread just reminded me of a 2 month period where all I ever talked about was torque converters with everyone I knew on this forum and at the race track!

Plus Rick is nice to talk to.... "i'm sooo busy" then talks for 45 minutesFor your setup, I’d call A&A transmission. They have 10” converters on the shelf made by Transmission Specialties. Cost is $900. Very nice piece. Work well on the street.
