my 904 transmission for small block. started leaking from inside the bell housing and drips out the inspecton plate. then it started slipping in first. now the leak is bad enough to the point where it wont shift unless I fill it again. I stopped driving it till I can do something. I can buy a rebuilt one off ebay for 1250 that come with a stall converter. heres the link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DODGE-TF904...NES-/161110871697?hash=item2582f4ce91&vxp=mtr
unless u think I should take the one I have and have it rebuilt or is that a better buy? very confused as what to do so i can get my green baby back on the road :(

I would rebuild it myself, but then I have been doing them for 30+ yrs. I know not everyone has the facilities to do it but if you can do it you'll save several hundred dollars. There's NO way would I ever consider buying that one off E-bay. Buying stuff off of E-bay is a shot in the dark. That seller might be ok but how do you know for sure? I have a buddy that thinks everything needs to be bought off e-bay. Funny thing is he has a small mountain of crap he's bought off e-bay that didn't fit, didn't work or didn't fit when he got it and he never got one red penny back on anything. I personally can't understand that mentality.

Back to yours, you can probably buy a street and strip trans. with a converter from a reputable transmission source just as cheap.

Yep here ya go. Cope Racing transmissions rebuilt 904 to stock specs for $695

Add a Trans-go TF-2 shift kit and converter and you'll probably be right close to the same price as the one from e-bay but you'll get a warranty you can trust. John Cope is a respected member here on the board and I know him personally and recommend him. The only disadvantage is he's so far from you. Maybe someone here knows a reputable shop near Riverside and will chime in.

904 is a pretty simple trans to rebuild...the trans itself probably 200 bucks in parts...

in Riverside alot of people like lukes off mission street. I think they said it would 875 to rebuild it if I brought it to them. does that price seem fair?

thank you. I'll more then likely get that from them or if I find a shop that has a rebuild price that seems fair. Ive never had to deal with trans before only engines sadly :(

There are a lot of small details that make a big difference in the life of the trans. The fluid cooler and lines must be inspected, flushed, the throttle pressure linkage must be set up properly, and more. These are the kind of details that can be used to deny warranty claims.
The trans service shops like Aamco have a reputation to maintain and a warranty that would effect their bottom line.

Good points.

Keith at 727specialist.com can hook you up...if it's been a long time since the tranny was overhauled you might want to consider it...could just be a seal leaking...fix that and you're good for awhile...depends on your pocketbook too. For my $$ I went with a mopar tranny expert who does nothing but rebuild them...not the cheapest, but he knows mopars and I've never seen a bad review on Keith. Doesn't cost you anything to call and talk with him about your specific set of circumstances and what you want to use the car for...just my 2cents... Good luck! Stay away from TCI!!

yeah I did stay away from tci. I read way too many bad things about them on here. someone body really needs to sue them. I went with John Cope. Im still wanting but from what members say about him, its well worth the wait.
