Trick Flow small block heads

I always like room to grow and only like to spend once so it would be studs for me. Especially since Trickflow heads have a specific small headed stud and 12 point nuts for that head because of clearance issues

Didn't catch that part about the clearance issues.
 
Yes, I did check them out. We had a great bench racing session and I also had a look at a very cool 72 Dart that lead69 is putting together with his son.

Should be done (he says) by the end of June. I'm looking forward to seeing that thing run.
That's the plan man, and it was a dam good bench session,lot of fun.Im thinking we will have to hit the track this summer whether or not we race our cars, there will be plenty of entertainment regardless.
 
Well. I finally made it to the track with the wagon.
It was not a success unfortunately.
My 28x9 Mickey Thompson Pro Bracket radials had cords showing so I put on the Mickey Thompson ET street drag radial. I just blew the tires off twice. The track was good so that was not the issue. It feels like it has a lot of power. Normally a low 11 second car with a mild 360. Should be an easy mid 10 second car now. Here are a few stats on the new engine.

394 cu 3.79 stroke 4.070 bore
11.9 comp
Eagle H beam rods JE flat top pistons
.581 flat tappet cam
Trick Flow 190's
Comp cam roller rockers
M1 intake
1000 cfm Holley carb

Sorry for not having any good news. Maybe next time with some new PBR's.
 
Just got my trickflows on the magnum 408 and fired up... Getting ready for a test drive around the block.

it runs?... Have the timing set way down since the compression should be about 12:1 with these heads. But unfortunately I have a water oil problem I'm trying to track down.
 
How about a refresher on what your combo is again??

Sounds like the kind of combo that can make good use of those heads.

Hope the water/oil issue is an easy fix.

If you used mls gaskets, and didn’t use sealer around the water holes in the heads and block........ I know that can sometimes be problematic.

yeah, they're cometic mls gaskets.. No sealer because they said not to (but that doesn't mean anything). All the surfaces were quite smooth, I think they require a 50RA or something along those lines. I think I got the water thing sorted. My Oil pan is a Kevko pan with baffles, it never completely drains and didn't realize when I jacked up the front of the car with the intake off it dumped water back into the pan. We'll see hopefully it's not more severe than just my error (at least I caught the milky oil in the garage before I went out and thrashed on it).
 
Yeah, the drain is outside the baffled sump area, so about a quart sits in the sump and never drains out. I just put another drain plug in the sump area. I sent them an email about 9 years ago. It would just be such a simple fix, but apparently never changed it

I think when the pan comes off next I'll probably do that. It's very annoying.
 
I like the pan! The capacity is good and it fits the k frame well. Only hangs down about 3/4”. Just move the drain!!!!!!!!!
 
I am pretty sure my new Kevco has 2 drain plugs. With only about 10 minutes on the motor I havent had to use them yet.

Mine does but they are basically on top of each other. Neither are in the main sump area. Relatively easy fix next time the pan is off. For now it doesn't leak at all, so it's staying put lol
 
The higher one is for oil level, if oil drips out there’s 6 quarts in the pan. IIRC.
 
I just got back from dropping of my block at the grey's Automotive machine shop when the subject came up about the Trick Flow heads. He had just dynoed a set on a mild 408. Cam was a Comp hydraulic roller 230/236 @ .50, Eldelbrock air gap, and Holley Sniper EFI. Horsepower was 439, with torque of 470. He was disappointed in the numbers. His thought with those flow number he would see closer to 500 on each. They have also talked to a couple of other shops that have done similar builds, and they get comparable figures. Right now dyno sheets are being sent to Trick Flow to see if something can be done. The leading thought is that these heads may be too big for a street engine, but are waiting for Trick Flow to respond.

What was the cam lift? Could be a case of mismatched parts again starting with the intake.
 
We ran a 408 on the dyno today with a set of the Trick Flow heads. Engine had a Performer RPM intake, Holley Sniper setup and a 230/236 hyd roller cam. It made 450 hp and 490 torque. Not bad numbers for sweet street engine. It idled super smooth with a ton of vacuum and was a very quiet and smooth engine. Should make a great cruiser for the guy. This is the first set of these heads that I'd seen. They look like they'll make a bunch of power but this was a street engine rather than a race engine. Anybody else have some numbers to share yet? It's the same engine that I am talking about, Grey's does all the engine work for AndyF. The numbers I got were from Gray's Facebook page so I that made sure I remembered correctly what he told me. Anyway, they are thinking there is more power there, just need to find what the heads like to get the most out of them.
