Trophy Hunters

-
None of my cars are perfect or what I would even consider "Show Quality". If they were perfect on nearly so I would not want to drive them or be worried about every little thing. I do drive them and take some of them to car shows just so people can see something besides a Camaro or Mustang! I go to be around car people and see the kids get all googoo eyed!

I go to car shows for the same reason I go to places like Trator Supply. Pay back. I drag my wife to places I enjoy and I know she doesn't. If I have to go stand around Victory Secert's looking like a pervert because she is in the dressing room, she has to go to car shows with me. I enjoy looking at all cars, but you can tell the guys that do there own work and the ones that don't.

On the other side of the fence, too, as someone who used to get paid to build someone else's cars, I can tell you that if the trophy doesn't come, then I'm a sorry SOB who can't build a car. Had one or two who called me after a judged event and rant that I'm no good at what I do, that their car didn't win, someone else did, they overpaid me because the car I built didn't win a trophy. They were gonna tell everyone that I sucked, etc. They never once saw all the people milling around the car at the show or the people who told 'em that car is one of the best they've ever seen. They never saw all the hours I spent on the phone looking for the right part or the hours I spent in the shop stressing over the fit and finish.

It's a shame some people got to be like that Ramenth. Some people think it's a competition sport and got to win all the time.

It's mostly been reduced to a "Kindergarten" show mentality anyway.
They have so many divisions and so many trophies that it's just stupid.

I look for shows where they have 1 or 2 trophies for each manufacturer, and people's choice/Best of Show. You generally have to EARN your prize at a show like that.

I went to a show in central Florida last year where they gave away nearly a HUNDRED beautiful trophies that were ALL tagged as "Overall Best of Show". :banghead:

Give me a show that is known by the test of time to NOT be biased as to car make, and where you actually have to pay attention to DETAIL to win, and I'm for it. :toothy10:

I have been to one show and it was with a friend I have not seen in a few years 8)
I don't want a trophy :bootysha: I enjoy talking and hanging out with car folks...
It's a car show every time I take Victoria in town :toothy10:
Everyone young and old always has a big smile on and ask's what year is it and bends my ear a bit, But I love it =P~.
Victoria has been parked for a few day's now, But she is always ready to roll. Thank you all for such a great gift in my life:happy10::happy10::happy10:
The camera guy need's to look for some fellowship and just go buy a trophy
if that's what make's him happy, I feel sorry for him having such a empty life.

At least you've got a valid excuse to look like a pervert at Victoria's Secret...me, they just throw out...

We have a Victoria's Secret's here to =P~ I walk up to the lady working and ask if my wife's order came in yet  Then the conversation starts =P~
memike is a big flirt and like putting smiles on the ladies :toothy10:

Ya know what makes me feel good about this...
The fact that "I" created MY car. And I say Created MY car because I did the planning and research because I had ever even seen the inside of an engine, never did body work, never painted a car. I'm the one who put the hours into it (Not to mention the my sweat and blood is actually all over the car! lol).

But when I drive down the road and I see people from their teens to their 70's giving me the thumbs up. I took so many pics of my car when I was working on it, I put them all in a book that I put out on the radiator. I get so many compliments on what I had done, some people just don't know.

I don't need no stinking Trophy ***** giving me any greif!

How did you resolve this CHILDs rant Ramenth? Did he actually look at the car and see the work you did?

I thought this topic would be about hunting big game
LOL
Ithought it was about women!

There is a local show i used to got to every weekend. I just went to talk to people and there were no trophies. The only trophy i wanna win will be on the drag strip.

my dad drove his 65 chevy corvaire to a show and jus parked it in the firld and somebody slapped a number on it while he was out walkin around and he took 2nd place and didn;t even know it till they left the plaque in his car cuz they never found the owner..lol

I have to quote a friend of mine, concerning car show awards and thier real purpose.----

"Honey, I'm cold, throw another plaque on the fire"

After doing the hobby now for almost 25 years with the same car I think I have come full circle;

As a young kid of 18 going to shows in the 64 which back then was my daily driver, I didn't care much about winning because I didn't have a whole lot of money to restore it to get "in the hunt". Then 10 years later with some more scratch I restored it and got in the hunt. The shelves piled up with trophies, built some more cars got more trophies.

Now that I am in my 40's helping my son build his first car I could care less about any of that crap, they don't mean much in the "big Picture". Now my concerns are who else is going and where are we going to meet up to park close to each other.

I never let anyone touch my car because that was "taboo" Now when they come around and you get "my mom had a car just like this" sometimes they get teary eyed because it reminds them of family passed on... So I tell them get in and I'll take your picture, they always refuse until I insist, then I made there day.

Now I will say this, I do like a nice dash plaque, my door on the garage is almost completly covered, I thought I lost the 2009 Carlisle Plaque I ripped apart the shed unitil i found my camping gear and there it was..... I was at Defcon 5 for a few hours that day.

My son who is 15 has the trophy bug, guess its the nature of things.....

I go to car shows for the fellowship with other car people. I love looking at one of a kind ideas. Yes I built both of my cars. A trophy or two is a nice affirmation that someone likes my car. I dont go just for trophy's. I also can relate to the guy who does like the trophy. To each his own I guess. If we didn't have cars that come to the shows then we would'nt have car shows. If a hunter goes to a big game preserve and pays to hunt does that make him any less a hunter? He just has deep pockets. Same thing with the car show guy. I just don't think we should go and throw the trophy guy completely under the bus for his ideas. My 2 cents worth.

I don't really care about entering my car into car shows. Now, if it is a benefit that is for a good cause then I'll enter mine. My car is by no means a show car or trophy winner. The last benefit I was at all that participated got a first place ribbon.

after getting the Prowler done I was one of those guys. Fast forward, I don't care, got too many trophies and wall plaques to display

I don't care now if I go to a show or not, go to see the other cars and talk with the owners and if it is for a good cause.

The Dart has won a far amount of awards, but I don't care if it wins or not.

I have judged some shows for special awards and know some wonder why the cars get picked, I would sometimes pick a nice car that might not get an award for that very reason.

At the monthly Indy Mopar Club meeting this past week a comment was made about a caddy owner that came to the 1st OPEN car show the club put on. Guess what it was mostly Mopars and several but not all awards went to mopars. The judges were the employees of the Chrysler dealer we had the show at. He is saying that if you don't have Mopar not to go to the show (he is posting this somewhere on the internet) I got to thinking and have decided to bring up to the club a new award CRY BABY AWARD for those trophy hunters that lose. Yeah he has a nice old Caddy and was on the power tour and in Hot Rod, but the guy is a whiner and a BIG MOUTH. As you can tell I'm not in a close friendly circle with this guy. And I even have a 74 caddy Coupe deVille.

Car shows bring out the best and sometimes the worst in people.

The shows put on to help the disabled, (Indy Mopar Club donated over $10,000 to JDRF in the last 2 years) raise funds for a family in need or special cause is a worthwhile fund raising event. Or for a club to raise funds to keep the old car hobby going is the real reason for many shows.

Go to a show and show off your pride and joy and on your way home your real trophies are the waves and thumbs up from all the people you see.

I agree with that 100%. Nearly everyone that has approached me says that seeing my car takes them back to a point in there life. Most others cause the car is plain cool looking.

Car Trophy hunters are wan****.
I wouldnt take my car to a show, just for that purpose, to WIN
a trophy.
Wanna earn a real trophy, compete in sport!

An whats with making fun of people who didnt build there car?
I didnt build mine,i know lil things, but i cant do everything.
So what?
Do i not like my car as much as you like yours because of that?
Thats bs.

Ive only ever taken one car to a show,an that was my ford escort.
Took it to the all ford day back in 2003.
I was told to sign it in for 'best escort' but handed the paperwork
back. Wtf do i care what someone thinks about my car.
I like it,i know its a weapon,an that was good enough for me!
My trophy was when i got there an out of a car an a father told
me hes kid wanted a pic of him with the car. That made my day.
So did when the escort that did win 'best escort' the owner told
me my one of hes favourites there.

I hope I see the guy who owns my old GTO Judge. I just KNOW it is a show car resto, since it survived into the mid '80s nearly perfect except for the blown M-21. It was a rare color too, so I got a strange feeling......
I intend to go on at length about the time during my senior year we had at least 4 joints going at once in the thing when a cop walked up beside the car and knocked on the window. I will also have to mention that whatever "trophy" he has won with it, it can't match the Cheerleader I used to talk into the back seat. I might also bring up that ***-kicking that happened when some of us car guys came out of the local watering hole, and some a-hole was using the hood scoop as an ash tray. I might mention that I still have the original Hurst T-handle from it because it was nearly impossible to speed shift/street race with, and it was tossed into a coffee can where I found it 25 years later. I consider that the first high performance mod I made to it. Might mention driving back from the body shop with the hood wrapped in blankets, strapped onto the top of a '71 Catalina I used as a winter beater and 455 donor, after having the infamous GTO RAM AIR hood warp taken out and repainted.
Then I'll say "trophy"....... man, that car is really living the dream these days eh? :bootysha:

I know this is an old thread but I have to comment on the last car show that I took my car to this fall. This was late in November, it was out of town and sponsored by the local car club. The show was attended by well over 100 cars, and of those cars there were only 5 Mopars. All 5 were not in any way show cars nor were 3 of them even close to being correct. Not being biased but honestly my car was (by far) the best example of all of the Mopars, stock or modified. When it came time for awarding trophies I did not place in the top 3, that`s out of 5 cars. Lol! All 3 winners were locals and members of the car club that sponsored the meet. It`s my opinion now that many of these car shows are political and it`s not whether you have a good car or not, rather what car club you belong to, where you live, or who you know. I`ll continue to attend the car shows because I like to show my car as much as I like to see all of the other cars but I now have a new way of looking at things.

How true that is. all the shows around here if you aren't a member you aint gonna get anything. O-well it's still fun to see friends

How did you resolve this CHILDs rant Ramenth? Did he actually look at the car and see the work you did?

Since he had detailed photos of the step by step of taking the car from zero to hero in 5000 easy steps in the trunk...no, there was no solving his childish rant. But he had the reputation in the area of being a dick. His own reputation preceded him. There were too many guys who looked at his car, liked the work done, saw the photos, took into account what kind of guy he was and called me from there. A few even dropped his name as to the effect of: "Mister Idiot says you're no good, but I saw the car and what it looked liked before you did it, sooo...."
Chalked it up to a learning curve. After that I got to learn to chat with my customers for a quite a while before agreeing to do any work for 'em. If they were gonna be those childish kinda people who thought they could go to show against a 1000 other cars and were guaranteed the trophy for best of show there was a 10% a-hole fee added into the estimate.
