V8 Engine sizes....

The 239 was a flathead was it not?
Couldn't say RRR. All I remember is my buddies t-bird had a 312 and my Dads truck had a 292 with that funky exhaust cross over in front of the engine and center bolt valve covers.

Yup. That was with the 272, 292 and 312. Those were OHV engines. Pretty positive the 239 was a flattie. I've always wanted to build one, too. I want the Lincoln V12 flathead, though. I can keep dreamin. LOL

Once again, according to Wikii 239 y-block replaced the flathead 239 in 1954 with a bigger bore and shorter stroke than the flathead.

I don't know man. You have to watch some of those wiki articles. A couple of their article on Mopar engines talk about stuff that never existed. Wouldn't surprise me about a 239 Y block though. That engine family is a bit before my time.

This time it's right though. Here's a good article from Engine Labs about the Y block. They were pretty cool engines. You even seen the head on one? The intake ports are rectangle, laid sideways and stacked on top of each other.

Got a 54 ford victoria in my back yard, with a 239 y-block in it. Still got 1954 plug wires on it .
Wouldnt pull a fat girl off a tricycle, even when it was running good as my daily driver, many years ago.
That motor was so weak, ford made it bigger every year for about five straight years.

....and here's what's sad. They were "pretty good" for their time. lol

Yep. My very first drive in my life in a car that would spin the tires was in a high school buddy's 57 fairlane with a 312 and a three speed stick.... with a J.C. Penney floorshift conversion.
Look what that started!
(Did you know Penney's sold cheater slicks? I had a pair on my 57 chevy)

Sorry to the o.p. for the detour. Back to your originally scheduled program.......

272-292-312
The big 3 all made a 400.

Chevy, Ford, Chrysler, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Buick all had a 400. Chevy actually had two. The small block, and the 402 big block which was marketed as a 400 in the trucks. And if you want to split hairs, there was the AMC 401.

Oops, ill follow you on that...I had one! 57 Fairlane 500 more-door, 4bbl Carter, solid cam 312, duals, 2 on the tree (it was a 3sp but you only had L and D...you put it in L and then shifted up, then pulled it back down to hold it in 2nd then shifted back up into 3rd) as quiet as a slant but would bark the tires easily on that big tank which was actually kinda light for its size. Power seats, windows, steering, brakes, Wonderbar seeking radio! ..no A/C though? Ended up putting a Cleveland in it with a 4bbl intake and a C4. Already had the good 9 inch with Equa-lok as I could lay 2 strips of thin rubber. The 312 wasnt a slouch but the Cleveland was about 100HP more. Ugliest set of healights on any car as they were supposed to be new for 57 quad headlights but DOT didnt approve the quads until after the car hit the market. The 58's had the quads with the same fenders and headlamp 'eyebrows', much better looking but then they F'd up the taillights in 58 and in '59 the whole thing went off the rails.
