Vintage Mopar Dealership Pictures

The old Tappan Motors dealership in North Tarrytown (now called Sleepy Hallow) NY.

As you can see, it was a small dealership although there is nothing on the building now to suggests that cars were ever sold there. They sold Chrysler, Plymouth and a mixed bag of european imports (MG, Jaguar, Range Rover and Volvo). The showroom and offices were upstairs, the service department was downstairs and the small car lot was between the service department and the street. The part that looks like it is being rennovated use to have huge glass windows from floor to ceiling. Just outside of the glass enclosure there is a small grass area (directly across from the crosswalk in the lower pic) where they would proudly display their most prominent car that they had for sale.

When I was a kid in the 60's I lived five houses up the street (on the right in the lower photo). One day coming home from elementary school there was a brand new shiny Plymouth parked on the premier grass spot - it was a bright orange Superbird. I had to run down there and check it out. I was awe-struck - had never seen anything like it. I got out my notebook and pencil and wrote everything down from the window sticker. Later that night I told my Dad all about it and why we should buy it but he was less than impressed. That 'Bird sat out there for a long time. Sometimes I wonder what ever became of it. That was 43 years ago but the sight of that 'Bird perched up on that display is something that I will keep forever.

Kewl story :glasses7:

Coolness Keith! It had been a while since I stopped in here so I had to start at the beginning. tmm

Here's a shot of Van Zee Dodge in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Jim Van Zee has raced for decades and although in his 70's he and his Challenger are a force to be reckoned with. He is so much fun to talk to and has a ton of old "back in the day" photo albums. tmm

That girl on the hood almost seems sad. I thought she was suppose to be happy sitting on a Charger hood!

All these pictures of old dealerships really gets the idea how they sold the cars back in the days. Love it!

Dad probably bought her a "white hat special", and the dealership was giving away hats with the purchase.

The used car lot of Sanders Motor Sales in Newton, Iowa, now closed. My car was a dealer exec car, so sold off this lot. The towers in the upper left are from the Maytag plant.

Here's a couple from Jim Van Zee an old friend of mine. The dealership is gone but Jim is still racing. He's in his late 60's (maybe older). He has so many stories to tell and I get such a charge talking to him and seeing his old photo albums. The Challenger is his present car previously campaigned by Bill Bagshaw.
