Water Pump Installation

My new water pump instructions state that RTV sealant should be used on the fiber gaskets. I don't see how that is possible on the trapped gasket without contaminating the pump with RTV. What is the correct installation procedure?

Remove gasket and apply thin layer of RTV to both sides and re-install.

look again, there is a gasket between the baffle and the housing and a second one to the block.

I never use RTV, it's a pita to remove.
But then, I only run 7psi in the cooling system so my 50 year-old heater-core won't blow up.
