weird turn signal issue

hey guys im working on getting my 70 dart swinger back together after having it all apart to do new carpet, head liner an a couple floor panels, the dash was completly out and the under dash harness completly retaped since it was getting kinda crumby , so here is the issue, connect the battery and you can here a flasher doing its thing under the dash and the right turn indicator in the rallye dash is blinking, with the key off and the head light switch turned on the head lights do work on high and low, no front or rear turn signals but the reverse light flashes, when you turn the key on engine running the turn signals do not flash at all and only the right indicator in the dash stays lit up all the time but not as bright as usuall, somebody on here said to run and extra ground to the dah and i did that and grounded it directly to the body and that had no effect. any one else have some tips on what to check or how to check something else out, i a little out of my league being that the car is 17 years older then me lol so any help would be greaty appreciated

You can download a complete Chrysler 70 Plymouth shop manual here, but the page numbers do not follow the "dash" numbering used by Ma so you have to "play" with page numbers

Also on that site are incomplete but fairly useful wiring diagrams which are sometimes easier to follow than the factory stuff. Again bear in mind they are not always complete or accurate

I would suspect a grounding problem on your rear sockets. Did you have any of the harness apart, IE pulled the terminals out of the harness connectors?

A couple of good test points for signal problems are the fuse panel, the flasher socket, the column connector going up to the switch, and the harness connector in the left kick panel where the rear harness comes up from under the door sill there's a 6 or 8 terminal connector there

First thing I'd do is feel around up in there and find out WHAT is actually flashing, IE is it the turn signal flasher or the 4 way flasher.

Was this a misprint? Do or don't the headlights work?

What WAS done to the wiring exactly? Any of it chopped up? All original? Robbed from other cars? etc?
 
Head lamps do work on high and low. I regaled and soldered some of the previous butchered connections that were just wrapped together but only taped but worked previous. The front side markers are not connected at this time does that make a difference. The dash was apart to clean the dust out of it but all original components back in. It is the turn signal flasher doing the clicking and not the 4 way flasher by the glove box
 
The odd thing is that the signal flasher should NOT be getting power with the key shut off. Are you sure the 4x flasher switch was not engaged?

Otherwise, this shounds like you have some wires crossed up somewhere.

My strategy is to divide the problem into sections. Take the wiring diagram, and I can help you in you need, and for example, disconnect the signal switch.

This now separates the

flasher going to the signal switch

brake light switch power going to the signal switch

unhooks the front left/ right lamps and wiring.

unhooks the rear left/ right lamps and wiring

Now you can access EVERYTHING that comes and goes right at the switch. You should be able to take the wiring diagram and ID brake light switch power coming in, which is hot with/ without the key on

So tromp on the brake pedal, and you should be able to identify that, and confirm the switch is working

Now probe the wire from the flasher. Pull the flasher out to confirm.

Next, ID the wire colors for

left rear

right rear

right front

left front.

You should now be able to take a probe and hook it to a 12V source with an inline fuse and probe those connections, and prove that each lamp is working. Additionally, when you inject power to the front lamps, the dash, hood, and fender indicators, if equipped should light.

This is a simple step by step process. Eliminate as much as you can, then deal with what's left over.
 
well I got back to working on my dart again and as 67dart273 said my 4 way switch was on (**** bad mistake lol), but I found the reason why only the right indicator on the dash glowed, I removed the dash and the small 3 prong connector that goes to the left side of the dash had just became unhooked, and the reason the turn signal indicator glowed was bad ground( err no ground) to the turn and park light signal socket, I looked at my wiring diagram in my service manual and it only shows a 2 wire connector but the replacement turn signal sockets I have had a 1/4'' flat tab where the ground should clip onto and get bolted to the front rad cross frame, so I made up a couple wires and soldered them in and voila turn signals, thanks for the hep to the people that did post, any body know where I can get a head light switch for the dash
 

Good you're makin progress. You should be able to get a switch at any parts store. They fit about "a hundred years"

You know how to release the knob shaft?
