welding cast iron

Yes mig and tig methods. Tig will always give better results, but all I have is a Mig. Tig just isn't in the budget. Wish it were,it's so versatile and results can be stunning.

So the link I provided was for a 2lb spool of cast iron Mig wire. $85...not cheap.

The really cheap stuff from china worked pretty good with a MIG. I don't know what is in it but, I had an HF roll of .023 and used it on a manifold. I'm pretty sure the manifold was cast.

Anyone ever weld cast using this? Got a cheaper source?

Royal 44-30 Premium Nickel-Iron-Manganese Mig Wire for cast iron.

Don't forget to preheat the HAZ with a torch and then cover it with a welding blanket, or something else that insulates and is fireproof to keep it from cooling too quickly when you're done.

bevel out crack, preheat well, weld, peen the crap out of it and bury in a bucket of sand till morning. watched a guy do it once, turned out ok..

Preheat was gonna build a mini brick furnace and use a torch, wife don't like carparts in the oven much, lol.Sand and buckets I got.Did not think of HF for welding stuff, will take a look thanks!

Procedure:
Prepare area to be welded by grinding or cleaning as well as possible.
Bevel joint to form a "U" groove. Preheat and postheat treatments are not
usually required. However, large complicated sections that are fully
restrained will have a better chance of not cracking when preheated. DC
reverse polarity with constant voltage is required. Shielding gas should
be argon or CO2 or a 75% Argon/25% CO2. Please see the Royal 44-30 sup-
plement (next page) for welding parameters.

When I weld cast just remember the three "P's"
Pre-heat
Post-heat
Pray-it don't crack

Thanks for posting this. I did not know nickel wire was available. I did it in the past with arc and it worked well.

No problem! This a good option if your like me and can't afford tig.

My Aluminum welding, nephew, for a profession told me that guys use stainless rod to weld cast, properly. We will see.

Came across this video. Welding cast iron with stainless wire. Good hint about preheating your workpiece in your barbeque!

Good tips on spark testing metal as well.

Spark test video. God I love UTUBE!

No pre heat cast iron welding.Similar to stitch welding sheet metal, but no spacing out the welds.
