The ragtop is running fine on an black box E.C.U. from F.B.O. systems, and I've had no ignition problems yet. Another thread in this forum mentioned a "Chrome" box.

My (sometimes fuzzy) memory tells me that MOPAR had a chrome box, but it was for racing only. I never knew why. I've also seen blue and the old standard orange boxes.

So, anyone ever done a rundown on the performance of the several different color E.C.U. boxes out there? Is there any rhyme or reason to what color the box is, as far as performance and reliability? The Summit online catalog shows two of the old style modules. The only difference Summit shows is color and price, and no reason to select one or the other.

i think it had to do with rpm range.... either the stability of the spark or strength i dont know

As far as Mopar's ignition modules went, black was standard, orange was supposed to be 6k+ rpm, chrome was for racing (up to 8k), and there was a "super gold" ECU that was good up to 12k, but was for racing only. Mancini list the specs of the mopar stuff here...

But, FBO isn't Mopar, its already an improved aftermarket ignition module. I wouldn't mess with it if its working ok. According to FBO, their systems is good to 8,800 rpm..

Also keep in mind that non-mopar replacement ignition modules can be any color. Standard Motor Products makes a chrome looking one thats just a standard unit. I've seen blue ones as well, if they aren't Mopar then the color doesn't really mean anything.

what he said.. :)

my box is Blue from Napa and works just fine.....65 cuda 318 mopar performance ingnition system..orange box died and got same from Napa. Keep in mind it is good to have a spare box at all times as for some reason they can be unreliable. Not all orange boxes are made by mopar, made in china watch out!

On the different boxes....isn't the only difference the amount of dwell or time for the spark to build up?????
