What is this hole in my firewall and whats it for?

-

Ah Yes, I see. Since mine is a Torqueflite automatic, must be an extra hole put there just incase it would be a manual. I guess Ill just plug it. I also see you have plugs in the top left and right oval holes, mine are left open, what is their supposed purpose and should I plug them as well?

Those are cowl plugs so you can clean the debris out I think. Let me get another photo.

You had better plug those holes if you don't want heat and engine smells coming inside especially if you're using the old style breathers on the valve covers.

The two upper holes would let underhood air in when you open the vents just to clarify.

Never thought they were plenum cleanouts, makes sense. We had a firewall hole in a Maverick we drove to Canada, it got so cold in there, I stuffed a pair of socks in the hole to stop 20 degrees blowing up my leg.

Another place you get unwanted air coming inside is if you don't have the cap/seal on the end of the steering column but I see yours has it 66DartSedan so you're good on that.

Agreed. Smell, heat, and noise!

True but you want the vent air to enter from the cowl with the hood closed and not from under the hood.

I have 2 of those plugs brand new in the package. I mistakenly ordered them about 2 weeks ago for my '69 Swinger. I wound up ordering the correct one. I will send you one if you don't have it. Just PM me your address. Hope this helps.

Nice! That's what FABO is all about.

Indeed, in my early A's I cleaned thoroughly from there, thru the cabin cowl holes, and fender drains (w/ inner wheel shields off), sprayed rust converter and painted. You don't want to deal with the nightmare when your cowls rust-thru. Other classic cars (Ford, Chevy, I recall) can unbolt the cowls to clean or repair. Some guys here place magnetic shields over the cowl slots to keep leaves out. I recall Mustang owners can buy them pre-cut. At least we don't have the plastic cowl covers that started in 1990's cars, which fall apart in the sun and are un-obtanium.

My 77 Caddy had those plastic extensions behind the taillight bezels, most were rotted gone on ones you still see, stupid. Imagine a Saturn in 30 years !
