my car was restored about 8 years ago and is a daily driver, so you know how the fenderwells and floor pan is starting to look like, rock chipped and sand blasted. i know someone who is willing to undercoat but told me to find out what kind to use. is there any that can be colored since the underside is sublime green, any suggestions would be appreiciated.

Have you given any thought to Rhino lining? Works great for pickup beds and can be mixed different colors. There is a shop locally that will match your color, come to your house, and spray it on whatever you have. They probably do more cars than pickups. Ain't cheap, but you get a rust through warranty. Just something to think about.

I had a Firebird my son and I restored sprayed with a truck spray-in bedliner. I don't recall the brand name, but it is a fairly "soft" material. I have the same bedliner in my truck and have really liked it. It would probably be difficult to spray on an "assembled" car (ours was totally stripped down at the time).
The paint store I use carries a product for spray in bedliners called "gator-guard" on something like that. If you purchase a gallon can he will let you use a special spray gun to apply it with. I'm thinking of going this route with the Duster I am now working on. I have seen similar "kits" at auto supply stores around town.

bed liner doesnt belong on a restored car, i would use spray can undercoating before that crap.

i checked into linex [i believe thats the same as rhino lining] and they told me it would be difficult to spray on an assembled car. i have heard of that gator guard before, i will check into it. do you know if it can be colored?

Don't know if the gator-guard can be colored or not. My guess would be no. Ted, what's wrong with the bedliner? The "restored" part? I didn't want any future issues with rust. This stuff won't chip or wear off and adds a "little" amount of soundproofing and insulation to the floorboards. The only downside I could think of was that it wasn't original to the car; but then neither were the holes in the floor!

The maim question to askany brand is ," Is it a sealed surface like paint ? " If not the material will need painted before coating.
There is a semi clear stone guard product that mfgs use in small areas behind wheel wells on later cars and trucks. Available in spray bombs too.

when installed on the bottomside of the car it will have major drips and general look like crap.

talked to a guy yesterday and he says that gator guard does'nt stick very well. any comments ?

My guess would be poor prep. I've never used it. My paint shop showed me a pick up truck bed that they sprayed about 3-4 years ago and it still looks great. I showed signs of use where they slide stuff in and banged the side of the box, but there were no chips or areas I noticed that made me think it wouldn't stick very well.

Ted, good point about applying the stuff on a completed car. Our body was stripped and we flipped it upside down on a rotisserie when we sprayed the underside.

I would definitely recommend gravitex... I have several friends that have used it with good success.. It is a rock solid undercoating and you can easily paint on top of it.. I picked up two bottles and the spray gun for application for about $28.00! I friend of mine that has used this in the past told me the two bottles should do the underside of the car easily.
This is going on the underside of my 72 340 Demon project. I have decided to wait till just before paint to put this on the underside of the car and the wheel wells.

It is a little more expensive at their web site... see link below...

Check out the PDF link below for specs about the product...

Let me know if you have had experience with Gravitex and how your experience has been using this product...

Thanks,

Craig
