What to look for in a used carb?

I am looking at going at a cheaper route and I am wondering when looking at used carbs, what to look for.
The thing is this is for a new engine that hasn't been run yet, so I am a bit worried about using a used carb on it.

Is there anything that should be obvious that you can see? Or questions you can ask before you buy?

Unless its remanufactured,you should expect to rebuild it. If you can inspect it in person look for major defects like cracked housings,warped baseplates and worn throttle shaft/bushings. Most everthing in a carb can be replaced or repaired. If you are handy with carbs,and want the bargain of your life buy a thermoquad.Parts are a bit of a challenge,but demonsizzler can help you out there. In fact Im sure he can custom build you a great carb for less than you'd pay for a new in the box carb that you would have to spend another $100 tuning.

I'm a fan of the T-Q and had work done by Demonsizzler before with good results! However, if you want to rebuild a carb/purchase a used on, some questions to ask would be;

Did/does it leak or will it need a rebuild? (The one pictured looks good, but that is only looks.)
How long was it used for?
Are the shafts worn?
Look into the venturi's to see how black they are.

There are some carbs here for sale from time to time by members that are good offerings.

Typicaly speaking, I'm not worried about the carbs I get since I'm fairly sure I can rebuild anything thrown my way. I also by the worst looking things you ever seen including one that came with a wasp looking bug in the fuel bowl and a 1/4 inch of mud along with it. It seem's like he made a home in there.
