I see some use RTV. Is this on the gasket, or in place of gasket? Install right away? Let it sit for 10 min??? What do you do? :book:

I just use the gasket, no sealer just feed a couple of bolts through the pump to hold the gasket on the pump and put it on tighten down and ready to go.never had a leak, maybe just lucky??

Fel-pro thick blue gasket I don't put anything on it. But if its the thinner black gasket material I put a small thin bead of ultra black or gray. Either way make sure you put sealer on the threads of the 4 long bolts if its a small block.

I'be bought reman'd water pumps that still had a small piece of the previous gasket on it. Painted over also so look close. Clean dry mating surfaces are more critical than sealant. I drag the gasket between 2 fingers applying a light coating of rtv on both sides. Makes it just tacky enough to stay in place. Cleans off easier next time too.

Will teflon tape work ok on the bolts?

For years, I've been coating gaskets with white grease. They seal better, and they come right off.

Copper coat in a spay can, I bet I have two cans of it from my past builds, I spay the gasket and let it get tacky and go, and on some water pumps I have just used the gasket.

I would be concerned of Teflon tape , it could wash off the bolts and plug a passage in your radiator if it is in a water jacket.

Also, You should not use teflon tape on any fittings on the transmission, for the same reasons memike stated. Come off and plug a passage.
