quickly grabbed what I saw on the shelf at the closest hardware store. 2 qts of smittys supply co, Roseland Louisiana, synthetic. (2) qts 10W-40 and 1 qt 10W-30
I have never used synthetic in a lawnmower , but muti viscosity oils have never lasted as long in any of my mowers..

I use what the factory recommends, no more, no less.
And I change it every year.
It's not like it costs a lot anyway...

The only reason I use synthetic is because I figure air cooled engines need all the help they can get. I differed from Royal Purple just yesterday when I serviced and repaired my zero turn. I used the O'Reilly brand 10w30 synthetic because it was on sale.

Depends on what you're cutting.
Weeds? Hash oil.
Corn? Corn oil.
Spaghetti or spinach? Olive oil.

All jokes aside, I doubt it really matters. You could probably get away with your used motor oil, your lawnmower will never even see 1000 miles.

I have a few NOS Briggs and Tecumseh's from the 70s and 80s that have never had gas or oil in them. Enough to last the rest of my days. Those older ones is get 10-15 years each out of them easily I usually run straight 30 but if all I have on the shelf is 10-w-40 they get 10-w-40 in them. They don't seem to care.

That said just run some 80-w-90 in it and call it good

Ha had a friend that built 5hp Briggs stock go kart engines
He would go around on clean up day and pull out anything with a Briggs
Seamed like the older the better
He get those things to scream

Good engines. I think JR. Dragsters started out with the 5HP versions. Now they have billet aluminum blocks, billet cranks, etc.
