Block casting numbers alone will not give you a definitive year. I have ablock which is 68-72. The water pumps from '68-'70 and '71 on differ according to outlet location and in this case material. If you have a stock water pump on there now, which side is the outlet? And is it iron or aluminum?

H = 1972
M = Mound Road Plant
318
R = Regular fuel
3650 = Day 3650 is Monday, July 26, 1971 assembly date
2350 = number of engines built at that factory that day

Water pump should be aluminum - not cast. where does you bottom hose exit left or right?
