looking at the dist. cap from over the right fender.....which dist. cap post is cyl number 1??

this is for a 76 Dart with electronic ignition. advance "bell" is ~ 4 oclock.

thanks

Yes, I know I should put the timing mark at TDC and look at the rotor....but I have no way to turn the engine yet.

Follow the plug wire from the driver's side forward plug back to the cap. The tower that it plugs into is #1.

If the wires are off the car, you can always turn the engine with a socket on the crank bolt till it gets to TDC on compression stroke.

Hope this helps.

When #1 is a top dead center under compression, rotor will be pointing between four o’clock & five o’clock. This is where #1 plug wire on the cap has to be. The vacuum advance can will be pointing in the same general direction under #1, and the wire exiting from the magnetic pick-up will be roughly located over the distributor clamp down bolt. This should get you close enough to start her up, and then you will have to dial it in with a timing light.

Technically it can be any where. The oil pump shaft sets the dist. and the dist can be set in at two spots 180 degrees around. But you want it to be on the driver side pointing near the center of the exhaust manifold.as stated above.

It could be anywhere. All depends on where the intermediate gear is stabbed in the cam.If you have a 0 mark on your damper bump the motor over till the piston comes up and tries to blow your finger off the holethen try and get that mark on the 0 on your timing tab. Where ever the rotor points you need the number one wire there with room to twist the distributor an inch each way to set the timing.

point the slot at the front driver intake bolt if restabbing while pistons at tdc. Scratch everything I said if its not an la motor. What do you have slant la or b, rb

This all makes sense. Thanks! In fact, in an older Chiltons, it shows that exact position for number 1, but I didn't have full conf. in just 1 illustration. I had 100+ "before" pict, but my HD crashed and I lost all the reference shots. oh well.

thanks!!!!
