Why is there 440source but no "360source"?

Hey mopekid, i got a set of bare cast aluminum procomps for my 318 build up. Yes i understand wanting a bolt on and go deal. I got these bare for.$380.each head, free shipping. Not bad i think for what essentially is an LA style casting with magnum like ports chambers and runners. I will have to do some work to em, and buy some 2.02" 1.60" chevy valves, but what the heck, i love messing with this stuff anyways.

Not sure what they got, but check out mancini racing too. They have an LA section in their catalog even tho most of what they have is B/RB and Hemi stuff

.I recently got my mechanical engineering degree and I'm (hopefully) about to start working for a start-up CAD company here in Denver that draws literally anything in SolidWorks (popular 3D modeling software). If I could find out what all it takes to manufacture aftermarket cylinder heads and if it would even be possible to make money doing so I would love to do it...l

Get a SB Mopar head and bandsaw cut it lengthwise like filleting a fish. so you have a top and a bottom. Now CAD what you see (and make it better wherever you want) and port it over to a CNC program. CNC both halves, Die cut a gnarly gasket and bolt it together. Do this so you can CNC the water jackets too, no blind voids. While you are at it, make us an AL slant head too!

Sounds like a plan I think I'll start with the stock Magnums on my 360 once I get better heads for that engine. A little confused about that last part though you mean CAD the head after it's bolted back together?

I don't want to die, I'm a god why can't I live O-O-ON!! lol

mopekid,

Thats cool your thinking of doing engineering R&D type stuff on mopar small blocks. I wish i had the time and wherewithall to go back to school. Myself being 46, married and 4 kids, its not in the cards for me.

As pishta said, a hot rod slanty head for all the slanty guys is a good idea too.

Yeah iron maiden was cool. I got some of their stuff, i was more into motley crue myself.

Take care
Matt

No CAD each half so you can modify the runner wall thickness, port shape, etc. Then CNC both CAD halves from solid AL blocks and bolt together the top and bottom to make one head. It will have a parting line right in the center running laterally. This was you dont have to cast the water jackets or make a solid AL head that cant be water cooled. Youll have to make the combustion chamber entirely on one half as a gasket wont survive in that area, design wise, that wont be an issue. I think an AMC racer back in the 70's did this to make the intake ports better on his stock heads...

OK now i get it. So basically this is a method for making a custom one-off head using CNC machinery? I suppose i could "sell" the design to a casting company if i made some kind of breakthrough none of the other current designs had.

moparmat2000: i didn't realize the procomps were that cheap i'm definitely gonna read up more on those. Where did you buy yours from?

Hi mopekid,

I got them of evilbay. Came direct from procomp. Nice thing about these is they look just like an LA head. Right down to shaft rocker oiling holes, shaft rocker pedestals, 5 bolt rocker covers, and are designed for an LA intake.

But the passages and cc chambers are like a magnum. They came bare, (no valves or springs) and are designed for std length 11/32 " shivvy valves 2.02, 1.60.

Another member told me have my machine shop junk the guides these come with , as they are very soft material, and he has seen em lock down on valve stems and get jerked out of the head.

Better guides, port matching on both ends, some good quality non magnetic stainless one piece valves and your on your way. Using shivvy valves is a bit cheaper, shivvy valve sets are all over feebay.

Tho i admire your wilingness to want to develop another SB head, there is stuff out there that can be used without reinventing the wheel.

Our engines are getting to be Old skool. Like flat head V8s are. I am happy theres more choices for the mopar LA than there was 20 years ago. I thi.k as long as people are buying hop up parts for these, then development will continue.

Hope this helps
Matt
