Hi there,

just looked around to find a source to buy a new windshield gasket for my 1970 Valiant (4 door) - but i found nothing.

(btw. same pbm. for the rear glass)

now it comes to the point, whether and how an old gasket could be refurbished

any hints ?

Call some of the vendors.
I believe the gaskets from other models will fit.

67-76 A-body 4dr should all be the same.

If you can find a gasket that isn't hard, split or cracked then you can use it. I reused my original gaskets and they were out of the car for 25 years, just take a scotch bright and some Simple Green and it will clean up. A good original will hold up better than any repop, most repop gaskets end up splitting and cracking within a couple years anyway.

Gotta agree. Another trick is Goop hand cleaner. This will not only clean, but also help get the gasket pliable again.

thanks for the first hints - Simple Green and Goop Hand cleaner are somekind of Dish Washing Things or Soap ? Please keep in mind i´m sitting here in good ol´ Germany :bootysha:

local glass guy just sprays it and wipes it down with silicon spray. after a good cleaning of course.

Simple Green is a chemical spray "clean everything" kinda cleaner. Goop is a waterless hand cleaner. The names may be different, but I'd bet you have something similar in your garage.
ABJ's silicone spray isn't bad, if you can find the right one. Some of the over the counter ones I've seen here are sticky and hard to work with, so you might ask your local glass guy if he has something specific to use.
ABJ, gotta name for the product?

man i watched him do it for a friend 10 years ago.. it was simple silicon spray from what i remember. i was surprised when he said there was no reason to replace the gasket and just sprayed it down. brought it right back to life.

Mineral spirits. I have pics of me doing in our restoration thread on this site, under "Members restorations", titled; "ABodyBetty's New Baby comes home". See thread. I have also posted a thread on step by step windshield install too. Search my user name and threads for it.
Good Luck! I know you have mineral spirits there!!

That windshield gasket is available new. It's still a current-production "Precision Part" available through any auto glass installer. Part number is WCR-D691. If no local shop will get one for you for some strange reason, you can get one from Steele Rubber, their p/n 70-2181-50, $122.30.

I work at at auto glass company. Steele Rubber is what my boss recommends and he has been doing auto glass work for a long time. I bought Steele Rubber for my car but have not installed it yet. Steele Rubber fits better than the others.
