i think the name of the game is gonna be optimization. things like utilizing earlier, lighter rods and the later higher compression pistons, 273 mechanical rockers, advancing a stock cam several degrees.

the intake and heads are [mostly] known entity, it'll just come down to preference of big port vs small port, quench head vs open chamber and how you want to approach making power.

it's an interesting exercise no matter the course it'll take.
'67 - 91 318's came with 273 mechanical rockers??

I did work on one a loooooooooong time ago. It was interesting to see the combination they used for that 318.
Man, I'd have to believe that someone badged a Satellite, or the 383 was replaced by a 318....

No. No point anyway. Nothing wrong with the stock hydraulic valve train. Could you shim the rocker shafts to gain less preload?
I wouldn't shim to gain performance, because I don't think any 318 came like that...

I think in 68 you could get 3.91’s 318 with a manual transmission. So by the rules, 3.91 is the best rear gear. You would have to approach it with the mindset, will the lighter whimpy part survive? Dont need an 8 3/4” when the lighter diff will live kinda thing. Weight would be incredibly important. Find that aluminum 318 block for starters. :)

I wonder if any 318 car came with 3.91's ..... I wonder if anyone could vouch this actually happened..

Another thing, I would only tune what the factory intended for me to tune. Which would be:
  • Ignition timing by turning the distributor
  • Carb idle mixture jets and raise/lower metering rods

This is where I got it from. The Drive vehicle specs for 68 Barracuda.

If you could order them, I think it would be fair game.
I think if I do this, I will have to verify that this actually happened or I would probably stick with what I know. I know they came with 3.23's, but I can't even find a 3.55 318 car. Pickups and Van are plentiful with better gears.

Can’t you run any metering rod or jet that came in any 318 carb stock. Not sure how many 4 barrels came stock, but they may have put different rods in different years. Sure is a rabbit hole.

I would run any carb, but I'd try not to mix parts. For instance, I wouldn't install 1.88 valves from a 318 "360 head" from a 4bbl car into 302 heads.

And, this is difficult to some extent because these parts are old now... lol

derp. i forgot your caveat of 67 as the break off year and blanked on only 318 as my lizard brain lumped 273 in there with it as the strictly "not 360 or 340" rule.
yeah, i picked '67 because that is the start of the LA

So, carb is a singular part, like an intake. Ok.
And, fortunately for me, I've already purchased the intake/carb from what would be a 1980 (if i remember correctly) year. Cast TQ intake and TQ. I also have different heads I can use, which really comes down to a choice of 2 in my opinion

and hopefully the body of the TQ is useable... lol. Honestly, the carb working correctly is my biggest concern. The rest would be cake walk in my opinion. Just assembly, not "building".
