I rebuilt a 727 for one of my cars and cant get end play on the input. I am absolutely sure I put it together right, but I'm wondering if it could be caused by mixing parts or using too much assembly lube.
I mixed and matched because no one transmission was purely in good enough shape to just rebuild , so some transplanting occurred. BUT I am aware of all the little year specific do's and don'ts.
Also I was liberal with the assembly lube so I am wondering if that could actually be causing some grief.
Just to clarify: Is Input end play supposed to be checked with the tail housing on and output bearing locked into the snap ring, correct?
I have the tranny in a trans fixture mounted to my engine stand. I have not done the "stand it on its tail shaft" trick I hear about. My book I'm working from ( Munroe) doesn't mention that nor does the service manual.

Forgot to mention I've gone back through it a couple times and monkeyed with different shims and thrust washers

There is zero chance, as heavy as all that is, that assembly lube is affecting end play enough to talk about

Are you having too much end play? Or not enough? When I use a lot of assembly lube, it will be hard to pick up the input shaft to check end play til after it breaks free from the lube, then it works fine. I do put the trans tailshaft on the ground with the tail housing in place. I have a bench mount that allows me to do that with no issue.

Yes lots of lube. I have been wondering if this could be a suction problem. I'm going to take it all back apart this weekend and wipe out a lot of the lube and look things over real well. Try again.

This is a topic where you may get several different answers when it comes to checking endplay.

If the hard parts are mismatched from several different years that could very well be a problem as pump stator supports and input shafts changed 3 different times. Need to check if you have a 2 or 3 ring input shaft and the correct stator support for that input shaft.

As for checking endplay, there is always a bit of slop or wear in the output bearing snap ring and/or extension housing (where the snap ring rides) on these. That is why some people will push the output shaft forward before checking endplay. In a perfect world there would be no rear endplay and the total unit end play could be adjusted and set without a lot of hassle.
