Well its 5 weeks today since i just about collapsed at work to find out i have a couple herniated discs in my back. I really dont feel any better and sometimes i think doing these excercises makes it worse. Im at my witts end. I have never been off work for more than a week.I suffer from depression as well and it aint helping. Have any of you suffered from this? is there any helpfull ideas other than Physio? excersises? Heat/cold? Anyone had accupuncture? Please i need help. Thanks Edd

Sorry you are still in rough shape Edd...for my bad back and neck, its anti-inflammatory "Diclofenac" and Percocets, sorry I aint much help bud.

Lower back, pain running into hip, down leg, into testicles ? They can fix that. If this is you and they haven't sent you to a neurologist to schedule surgery yet, you haven't cryed loud enough. I wont let them go into my upper back or neck again. I'll live with and manage that pain as best I can. They've been into my lower backa few times in a few places. Fixed every time if only temporary.
If yours is lateral pain across the lower back, lots of changes you'll have to make and fix that yourself. Lumbar support cushions when sitting, quality shoes when standing.
If you like to kick back in a recliner in front of the TV... There's you problem. Throw the recliner to the curb.

The pain killers don't do anything but give you a painful buzz. Only thing I've found that works when I have a flare up is Prednezone. They come on a card - 6 the first day 5 the second etc.. Usually by the third day I am on my way back to normal (my normal:))

I feel for you bro.
Sitting makes mine worse.
Strenghtening my back muscles through exercise
has helped, but I was unable to do much until
it let up some.
800mg ibuprofen and unkers salve helped.

i have bleeding stomach ulcers so I can have any of the pain meds. No choise but to learn how to manage the pain.
BTW good luck

Aleve is the go to for inflammation that IS putting pressure on your herniated discs.... A hot soak in the tub and then ice pack the area seems to help my neck and lower back, I hope to be hearing from my doc today
move slow and smart, no reaching or bending over Edd, squat and let this heal (if it will) as soon as possible. I hear ya bud, Arthur is moving everywhere it seems in the last couple of years and I have been waiting on more results, I should be glowing after 14 X=Rays about a week and a half ago. I may have to try the accupuncture, never have tried it.
And X10 on the recliner, I don't have one and stand and never sit for more then 15 minutes at a time !! self help goes a long ways .

been out for the last 4 weeks myself with them same thing. I assume your going to psychical therapy? The best thing I have found that helps is a combination of traction (strap around waist while therapist applies slow constant tension.) and using ice pack and tens unit at same time. he can stretch a huge part of the pin and needles, numbness and pain out. the problem is it only lasts about 6 to 8 hours if I take it easy. Normally, I get some much needed sleep 2 to 4 hours a night is not cutting it.

I was on Prednezone (steroid). I am diabetic and it made my blood sugars soar to over 400. I am likely going to have an epidural injection cortisone (another steroid). It is said that can be a great relief for the pain by helping to reduce the swelling. The injection can last 4 to 6 months and buy the time for the disc to heal.

I had acupuncture years ago I didn't really get much relief from it. It didn't make it any worse either. We are all different so it is worth a try.

As Red said posture, posture, posture have to retrain yourself to do/not do certain things.

2 herniated discs? Wanna trade? I have 7. All that can be done is surgery and there is a better than even chance it will get worse. At least the one I had fixed did. Painkillers are not an option because in the end you will be strung out on Oxycontin or worse. It's no bed of roses but my life got better when I sucked it up and kicked all that to the curb. I may be in pain but at least I know where my *** is at all times. It's right below that mass of pain.....

I have a couple bad disc's in my lower back and between my Chiropractor and a couple Ibprophen a day I have managed to nurse myself back to reasonable health without operations and prescription drugs. A inversion table may help ease the pressure on the discs and that pinched nerve. tmm

Im glad u posted this as I have the listed symptoms. My doctor did a sono gram of my ******** and said it's epiditimitus, from a vasectomy that was done 15 years ago and that in no way shape or form is the back pain related to the testicular pain.

I have it too. 2 herniated discs L4 & L5. You have to strengthen the back muscles. That's the best thing to help long term short of surgery. If you are still suffering from the initial pain from the injury you need to rest until it heals a little. That means bed rest. Doing the exercises at 1st was tough but eventually I felt better as I got stronger. Sometime I need to get cracked back into shape & that takes some pressure off it. If you are overweight then losing a few #s will help too. There is no cure for it, just ways to reduce the pain. Good luck. Gotta rest it when it hurts.

Positively let it shrink down first and heal then self help and move smart.

X10 on these posts, it has kept me off the O.R table for many years, I enjoyed the water (swimming pool) work out's, yes a 30 minute work out with instructor was well worth my time and very little expense, I have a Chiropractor that has seen me for many years and kept me going and feeling good, Healthy and strong..... But once you get back into shape be smart and don't push/pull/lift to many Lbs. This will just compact it again..
Couches recliners and a bed to heal, then never set for more then 15 minutes at a time.. all you have to do is stand up then set back down when you are resting.... good days will return I pray.

I had pretty much the same symptoms years ago and my family doctor sent me for a cat scan and it proved I had 2 herniated discs so he sent me for a steroid injection in my back. That lasted about 6 months then the pain came back so he sent me to a back specialist....or so he thought. That quack did an x-ray and said I had nothing wrong just needed physical therapy in his p.t. office. (he owned the whole building,x-ray lab, p.t. office, and dr. offices too) I told him he was full of **** since the cat scan had shown otherwise and where he could put his p.t. I went back to my family dr. and he agreed with me and sent me to another back specialist. This doctor was very good and told me he didn't like to do surgery only as a last resort. For 9 years I had 1 to 3 injections a year until they quit working and he said it was time for surgery since the injections were no longer working. He did a great job I have had a couple of flare-ups in the 15 years since surgery but I am pretty much pain free in my back still. Now my knees and right hip are a different story. This comes with old age and working on concrete floors for 43 years.

Years ago I had the same troubles and besides barely being able to get around I could hardly push the gas pedal in the car. I was sleeping on the floor and crawling around in the morning until I could stand up.
The doctors advised me I could have an operation but I would have to wear some kind of body brace for 6 months and there was still no guarantee that it would solve my problem. Technology might have changed by now, this was probably 15 to 20 years ago.
A woman at work had the same problems but had the operation and it didn't help her at all so I decided I would try to live without having any operation.
Someone else at work told me to get a book by the Back Doctor or maybe it was called the Back Doctor and after reading that book and following the exercises my back did get better but it took three years. It took patience and perseverance. Some of the exercises did hurt in the beginning but it got easier.
The book makes you think twice about how you are misusing your back and how bad our posture is.
I believe the book now has another updated version but I have never read that one.

Good luck

Have the same thing through the nuts even going into right buttock. It is mostly in left leg, My knee gives out so it is hard to walk and I have some drop foot on left as well.
Unfortunately for me my L4-L5 bulge is baseular I guess it normally herniates to one side or the other, because the tendons etc running down the middle help retain the center.

I had my first back surgery in 1992 blown disc L4-L5. This gave me some relief but as the surgeron will tell you it won't fix your back. This just gets the disc away from the nerve to relieve the pain in legs and back. In the last five years I have had two neck surgeries and have two plates and eight screws in my neck. Still in quite a bit of pain and somedays have to take flexerial and hydrocodine to get some relief. Even with the surgeries I still lost my job of 32 years with ATT. I am on ss disabilty and limited to what I can do. My advice keep doing theraphy and get abdominal muscles as strong as possible and alot of ice after work out. There is no cure for this you just live with it a day at a time. I will keep you in my prayers.

ed try to see some doctors and find a fix dont try not to mask the pain with oxy or other harsh pain meds your quality of life will be worse and you will have that dam monkey hangin on your back also.

You really should look into an inversion table. I have issues at L4 and L5 from a car accident years ago that cause debilitating sciatica. The first doctor that I saw wanted to do surgery, but I was 18 and surgery didn't seem like that great of an idea to me. I saw a chiropractor for about 2 years, sometimes 2 to 3 times a week, until I was up late one night and saw an ad for an inversion table. 20 years later I still have the same inversion table and haven't been back to a chiropractor. When I start to feel the tingling in my leg or a little hitch in the giddyup I get my butt to the table and hang for about 5-7 minutes. Sometimes its a subtle little pop, sometimes I sound like popcorn popping, but most of the time it's just a cooling sensation and then I need to rest for the remainder of the day. On occasion when I am working out of town and can't get to the table for a few days, I go find a massage therapist and usually they can do enough that the headaches and numbness are manageable until I can get home.

Yoga!
I've had back problems for most of my adult life.
I took a college phys-ed yoga class more to meet girls than anything else. By the middle of the semester I felt better than I had in a long time. A few years ago I was throwing my back out every other month with shoulder and neck pain. Someone recommended the book Back Care Basics which is based on yoga and I've been pretty good at doing the exercises about 5 days per week combined with walking. My back is in its best shape of my adult life.
The link for the book is below.

Good luck!

You have all the suggested treatments posted on here now if they don't help I would try asking your doctor about a local laser place they have an out patient quick surgery if that dont help then it's full blown normal surgery prayers sent

It's tough and I feel for you. About 7 years ago I blew out my L5 and spent 2 months on the floor barely able to crawl to the bathroom because the sciatica was too painful. The longer I laid around waiting for the doctors to do something the more hopeless I became. Being addicted to the pain meds made me a physiological mess too.

Like Pacuda said above, Yoga is what gave me my life back. Drinking lots of water and strengthening the core took the pressure off the nerves. Of course, doctors, pharmacists, and surgeons would love to keep you as you are and turn you into a little cash cow for the rest of your life so you have to take charge for yourself.

I also know plenty of guys that hurt their backs then added several inches around their waste making themselves worse.

I really hope ya feel better and things will eventually turn back around. Here's a great watch for some inspiration.

Thank you all for the responses. Its up lifting. If i could learn to relax and not worry about stuff to be done and feeling somewhat useless id be better. I have great support at home which is a big plus. Im on Dilodid and flexerol as well as Naproxin for inflammation. I dont sit long and only if i have to.Im holding back on the excersises as of last nite. Im going to give it a few days to see how it goes. Im looking into accupunture...what the hell im already in pain..LOL. From some of the posts i read im not that bad off compared to some of you. Thanks again everyone, it means alot.

Skip the Naproxin Edd, get "Diclofenac....made a world of difference for me. I was on Naproxin...might as well been eating Mike n Ikes!
