Just like it says. Did car guys tint their windows in the mid-late 70s? Im just curious as to when the trend started. I know we've discussed yes or no to tinting windows on here and its all personal preference. But would it be acceptable to lightly (maybe 20%) tint them on a "period build" for that era?

I don't remember It much except in those bubble windows on custon vans from back in the day,...Cops would give us too much crap for even those.

I agree. I ran around with a lot of car guys in the late seventies, and I don't remember anyone tinting any windows til maybe the early 80's. But hey, this is the mid-west, trends take longer to reach us.

it probably was the yearly 80's but could have been the late 70's I tinted the windows in the motor home. Film was available so even though I didn't do any of my cars some probably did

Limo tint was popular but not on muscle cars

I had the windows tinted in my Prowler before I brought it home from the dealer. Like the look, but when I leave it parked with windows up I end up with hand prints on the windows where people try to see in

Was going to tint the windows in the Dart, one reason is for the AC to work better, but never got around to it

I had planned to tint the windows in my 65 Valiant to help keep it cooler and stop some sun fade. I had a sample just to see what it looked like but didn't like the looks. It's a personal preference though. Just my thoughts. Jerry

I really like the looks. I was at the body shop that mine is at and the drivers windows were covered and from the pass side it made it look like they were tinted. It looked really good against the orange. I can't decide if I want to tint them or not because im going for that 70s look. It would look good, but at the same time if its at a show or anything the windows are down and I don't have AC so no cruising with them up.

Mid to late 70's your bad years for cars and NO I do not recall anyone tinting windows

The earliest tint I saw was early 80's when I was stationed in SoCal,...I'll be doing the Spacer, It'll look cool with the charcoal paint w/ black highlights,...almost same scheme as Elenor...

I had a 68 Dart GTS back in 1971, and I tinted the windows. I cant remember if film tints were available back then, but what was available was spray tint. You just masked off the inside of your windows, then sprayed the tint starting at the top until it ran down the window creating a colored film. My Dart was dark blue, and I used a dark blue tint. Looked cool. Of course, it was illegal.

Granted, most trends start in SoCal and spread from there.
I used a spray-on tint on the windows of my first car, a '64 Olds Cutlass, back in 1967. Had it on for a couple of weeks before I got stopped and got a 'fix-it' ticket and had to scrape it all off.

I graduated from High School in '82 and there were already cars and vans around with window tint then, got my first car in '80 and tinted the back windows and across the top of the front one.
Yes it was around in the 70's must have been up here in Canada before the US cause we are higher up on the map therefore closer to the sun! LOL

I was going to say no until I read this post. I had a friend who bought a 69 Coronet in High School. Would've been around 1974. Somebody had used green spray tint on the windows. I remember it was all scratched up & looked like crap. I had seen the stuff in JC Whitney & Warshawsky's (sp?) catalogs but that's the first time I remember seing a car that it had been used on.

Exactly, tinting windows has been cool as long as I can remember. In the late 60s, I bought some of that spray stuff and made a huge mess in my 64 Barracuda. The key was to run the stuff, with no dirt bubbles. Never did get it very good though. Then I think the film came out in the late 70s maybe, I never did buy any of it, but those shops started popping up and some of my friends got it done.

I never really noticed any in the 70's , but Im in the same age group as Dorian. Early 80's is when I can remember it being popular, and remember looking at some cars that just got it done and a week later its off....bored cops!! It was almost a game to see who could tint their windows and have it on the longest. I grew up in the town where the cops were put to pasture (came to retire and get fat). Tim Hortons was put in right across the road from the cop shop.

I have used the spray stuff and it is basically Kandy paint. (Clear coat tinted with color of your choice)
Instead of letting it run down I sprayed dry coats until I got it the thickness desired. I had no bubbles and it comes out well. I have also used regular spray paint on windows that I didn't need to see through and this works great as well.
At one time in my area there was someone that could put the tint between the glass on windshields as they were being made. It was great because it could not be scraped off and kinda considered stock.

You guys are nowhere near old enough. I graduated in from high school in 66 and there was at least TWO cars (both friends of each other) who had tinted windows "way" back then.

One was a REAL nice lookin 55 chev, real dark green and green winda's. 265 and 4 speed. Great big 365hp cam Rode like a truck.

I parted out a 67 cuda and the back glass was tented on it, it looked like it had been sitting since the 70's it was waaay back in a junk yard.

When I was in high school in 1970, my buddy Mike had a metal flake blue 55 chev and I remember him doing the blue spray on tint. Like others have said it didn't last long before the law made him scrape it off.

................Yup, Johnny Law made ur life misrable back in the 70s where i lived............if anything wasnt what they considered factory it came off real fast, or they impounded ur vehical............kim..........

I sprayed mine blue in 1967 and had a friend that sprayed his rose color. Both fords but looked cool.

I work for a NOS Ford Part supplier and I pulled a vent window for a 60's car the other day that was factory tinted.
