Desert Car Kings

-
they dont even rebuild the suspensions, they used a 66-67 charger console! didnt align the front end when it went down the track, hood wasnt lined up,all the gaps looked like they were off. rear bumper looked twisted. these arent restored cars!!!!

The sad thing is that these aren't the only guys doing the shady "used car salesman" tactic to make a buck on these cars. They bought a project car for three K. 50 minutes later, some poor bastard bought a project car for 15K.

"No, it didn't used to be a taxi. It's yellow primer. Everyone is using it these days".

There's so much of that show that's just put out there for drama. The $2000 rear window for the Barracuda! Did you see all the complaining they guys did about how much work it was going to be to convert a 12 volt motor to run on 6 volts? They always seem to finish a car within an hour or 2 of the auction. And I bet they filmed the part where the old man said that anything under 20 seconds is a good run AFTER they ran the car & saw how slow it was. I told my wife about it last night & said that I thought the SOHC Neon 4 door we bought back in '94 could've probably beat that Charger in the quarter. :wack:

The old man doesn't understand the workings of a dragstrip either. He made a comment "if you don't get off that light quick, it'll cost you a half of second".
Total idiots at this so-called restoration work. I'm sure they make a very good living at the salvage.
How about the chevelle drama, no oil in the engine.
When is the last time anybody here buy a car without checking under the hood. Yea, right.

I gave up an anything on Discovery after they destroyed multiple very clean Chrysler Imperials on the Green Hornet episode of Mythbusters. IMHO they can all go to hell. To be honest, if their idea of "discovery" is to destroy classic Americana... I wish they would discover foreign cars.

Bottom line i think, is that the show is intended to attract people like us on this site. What they don't realize is that they will not keep viewers very long if they continue to underestimate the credibility of their viewers and not respect the hobby. What viewers will they attrct then? Without change, this show is doomed. I for one wish they will evolve into a more interesting and believable show. They don't have to do a complete car each show. just my 2 cents.

How would you like to be the guy from the Russo & Steele auction who bought the GTO for $21K? Then get home and watch the show :mumum:

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!

on the episode where they do the 66 chevelle convertible and when the guy and his girl are looking for parts for his 55 buick roadmaster and his girl's ride. i know him personally he works and runs DOUG'S BUGS N BUNNIES VW shop in mesa off of extension and broadway. he is very knowledgable on VW's and he had been cruisin his rides for a long time. when are they going to replay the charger episode? i didn't get to see it last night.

I just feel sorry for that poor kid whose dad bought him that Charger. All his Mopar friends at school who watched the show won't give him a moment of peace.

I watched the Charger show last night. I wouldn't be bit surprised if the paint job started peeling and cracking 2 weeks after it was done. They did not prep that car at all.

Do you think the guy that bought the Charger, would have bought it, if he had watched the episode first?
I think not.
These shows are done in advance, I don't see anybody buying a car from them for a season 2.

I watched it last night. Wish I would not have. About fell over laughing when it ran a 19.6. I think that kid will be safe. He just got him Honda performance with better styling.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!

That's exactly what I was thinking when I was watching it last night. I would have been totally embarrassed just bringing that GTO to that auction. I think it was a setup bidder too because no one would have even had time to examine the car before it came across the stage it arrived so late.

Wow. Tough room....LOL

At the risk of being tossed into a pit of flames, I actually like the show.

I don't always agree with how they do a car......and what they are doing is faaaaaar from "restoring" IMHO....but they are basically flipping cars.....they take an otherwise wreck of a car and make it into a driver-quality vehcile that can be used as-is or taken further later.

We all may not agree on how they do it or to the level of quality some think it should be done, but at least they are bringing attention to the old-car world by actually showing the cars and (generally) the process of getting them on the road again. That may encourage a whole new generation of kids to be into the cars we love....and that can only be good.

I drive a car that was flipped by a body shop......I bought it and all it had on it was fresh paint. Frame and floors, etc were like new.....very little bondo. Needed everything redone or gone over, which I did myself, just to get it on the road..... I, in effect, did something similar to what these guys are doing there.....except my paint was already done. Over the last couple years I have swapped stuff out and made improvements. Last year the drum brakes got replaced with disks, this year new gears to replace the 2.76s...etc....

They are making cars that would otherwise likely be parted out or junked into driveable vehicles to be appreciated and loved again.

Whats wrong with that?

Don't forget, they are new to the process as well and are still learning...and their local auction market won't support $50k restorations (yet)....so they invest in and turn out cars that will bring $10-15k or so.

From a "priduction quality" standpoint, its not a great show....but for me its entertaining because they concentrate on the cars. The way American Chopper USED to be before the drama took over the show and made it another crappy soap opera.

And at the least, they show actual cars and work being done.....I was watching a web-show called "Graveyard Cars" and its basically all grabass with little car content from what I can see.....watched 3 episodes and its all the same stuff...its more a soap opera than a car-guys show, to me.

I dunno....call me nuts, but I'll watch Desert Car kings again.

I have a couple of ?s for them...

1. Why did you wait till after the car was painted to remove the headliner with all of the mouse crap in it ??

2. Why didn't you paint the inside of the doors and also the floor pan instead of just leaving it with a covering up rusty sheetmetal ??

And 19.? 1/4 mile at 75 mph....hell, an old VW bug could beat it.

I've owned a few VW's, & I'll have to say that a STOCK old VW bug couldn't beat the Charger. I didn't record the show so I couldn't back it up to check, but it almost looked like they were putting the new top on over the old one. And I wondered about the headliner deal. Some of that crap could've come blowing out onto the paint (maybe it did?).

They are not very good at restorations, but at least the cars are better off after they leave them. They are still giving cars that were left to die another chance.

i agree i watch the show but i dont believe anything they say. i watch gearz with stacey david, and trucks now has gone to doing late model only. muscle car the pro touring look is ok but not on everything and thats all they do. horsepower tv. ok take a chevy big block, a ford big block and a mopar small block? you couldnt even get a truck or rv 440 to build? or are they just scared cause the 440 is in whole different league than the 454 or 460? if i remeber right the 360 made close to wat the big blocks were making. they have a show called car warriors, ok, they put two teams up against each other for 72 hours straight? pleeeeeeaseeee dear god can we get out of the dead lines and get back to wat basically was the first car show ive ever seen, shade tree mechanic. and show ppl a how to, rather than a drama show? i still watch gearz cause stacey david knows wat hes doing, it might not always be a car and it doesnt alwys get done on the first episode but its a how to and i think its great cause ppl who mud dont always have big bucks to throw into a truck, i ride a four wheeler. so lets get another how to and show ppl it can still be done!

i like gearz too i also like car warriors though. they do some cool stuff on that show considering they only have 72 hours. watch the datsun one that was a good one as far as imagination and creation go. as for desert car kings..... i dont like it. i only saw one episode, i think it was the cadillac one but i dont remember and i spent the whole show just saying WTF are they doing?

That is an honorable opinion however I think anyone on this board or anywhere else but Death Valley Subdivision would kill to get a shot at a $5500 dollar 396 chevelle convertible so we could restore it correctly and give the car it's props....and BANK!

Like the man said he's selling cars that need to be re-restored.

So sad...so bad...why did I watch it?#-o

Oh **** a squirrel just fell out of a tree here....gotta go.

I watched last night the cuda turned out nice as a driver, the gto was a joke[frame repair ect],the charger was a pile to start with [fell asleep what happened] i'll watch again for entertainment purposes only thought the show sucked, but they are helping old cars to see a new life.I hate car warriors it's the dumbest crap iv'e ever sat for an hour to watch, good judges they must be bored.
