This thread has me wondering how the yellow suggested speed limit signs are determined. When I go to town down 291 I can not help but notice how slow the suggested speed limit is on some of the turns. One of them is 20 mph, I go thru it in a diesel 4x4 at about 35 mph safely....

I know that if a stop sign has a white border around it, it is optional... LOL!!!

The DOT determines the rate of curve plus banking. Then they use a formula to determine what speed is safe.

I agree, and it goes both ways. Idaho, who is NOT known for their successful highway projects (equipment in the lake, highways sliding off mud "base material" or the "big hole" on the Mica hill, etc) have constructed a ?? temporary?? road bed up N of CDA on 95 while they FINALLY are starting to upgrade the goat trail. This thing is marked mostly at 45, and there was one "yellow" 45 that DAMM!!! I don't thing you'd wanna be goin much faster especially in the rain, etc.!!!!

Sometimes I think "they" (that's "the thems") just stand there and "ya, thas' boutta 40..........."

My personal feeling has been that all speed limit signs were based upon this: the Yugo.

Which is: "On any given road, what is the safest maximum speed you could drive while driving the biggest POS on the road(the yugo)"

The speeds are (at least theoretically) determined according to the criteria in the U.S. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (learn about it here, download it here).

the best speed limit sign I have ever seen was in Germany........ I was doing 95 MPH (In a rented Toyota) and got past like I was stopped! The autobahn was unbelievable.

In reference to post 10: In Pismo Beach(in1986,no less) ,an associate was into IASCA stereo competition. He bought the cheapest car he could find.It was a Yugo.Installed 1200 watts of stereo crap in it.Ran into him in 2004,still had the damn thing in his garage.:wack:

Remember a hand gesture will get you a ticket but blowing past a cop doing 150+ is perfectly legal! God I miss that

X3 on the Yugo + add rain and maybe snow.

I've take 25 mph curves at 50 in my wife's minivan, that was with a dry road and good all season radials properly inflated. I'm sure with bad tires and a little rain, that same curve would be scary at 25.

Personally, I consider all speed signs to be merely a suggestion.

Joe Dokes

you had better be polite while the traffic was blasting past too! Those could be expensive tickets. The Polizei were no joke either. I learned something there, speed limits are a good thing.

FWIW, i was told by an ex cop that if the suggested cornering speed was lets say 20mph, and lets say the normal speed limit is 45. If you get a ticket for going 30 in the turn, you can beat it if you can prove your car can safely go faster through that turn. Ie. if you have a Lamborghini. interesting fact.

although i doubt you will get in trouble for going faster than suggested as long as its under the posted limit, and your not sideways with your tires squealing or something crazy like that.

But, if you don't know the road obey the signs. sometimes the sign says 5mph or 15mph and means it!

Back in 2000, a movie was released that starred Danny DeVita and Bette Midler called "Drowning Mona." It took place in a small town. EVERY CAR IN IT (except for a camouflaged Omni) was a Yugo! One of the cars in the movie would only run in reverse, so every time you saw it going down the road, it was going backwards.

The last time I drove through Oregon, the road signs had no mention of a speed limit. They looked like suggestions to me. They said: "Speed 65" or "Speed 45." Never saw the word limit.
:wack:
Made me wonder if it was possible to get a ticket there for speeding, since they didn't seem to have any limits, as such.

Anybody here from Oregon???

I recently watched that movie and was wondering if that was an omni I saw lol
