i can teach you to swear en espanol
Know some of them, only thing I have picked up from the wife.....besides what her and her Dad call me lol

I am a Canadian that has been living in the US for almost 20 years and loving it. I have almost completely lost my eh. Just trying to keep it light. This isn't the right place to debate this stuff!
Eh? I agree not the place to debate this. But at the same time that kind of comment in a thread of this nature is just well, won't stoop to that level.

I would hate to visit another country while on vacation and be treated with the same attitude people treat non-english speaking people here.....just saying.
Wife thinks that one of the biggest problems with our society today is people are just flat out rude.......and I agree with her. Where does one stop with this sort of mind set? Your deaf, so you do not belong? Your blind, so you should just stay home?

One of my troubles with trying to learn is my very short attention span. Another is how words have many meanings, all just in the context of how they are being used. Ernie has joked about buying me the Rosetta Stone program.......might be my best bet....

Doug, another thing you can do is watch the news and/or other shows on a Spanish channel.

Oh great. Now he's gonna get hooked on novellas. Next thing you know, his avatar will be Erik Estrada.

start with getting some books made for kids ........sounds dumb ....but your prolly at the same level as a kid......the news and movies may be too fast right now .......baby steps......thats how we all learned our native langauges as kids.

materials made for kids can be entertaining too......

thats how i learned english...i was already 16 when i started to learn english .....but i started with books for first graders. LOL and now ten years later im working on a masters degree.....so if your serious and you put real time into it and start simple you will get it.

If you don't mind me asking, what language did you speak for the first 15 years?

I learned German in high school. By the time Uncle Sam sent me to Deutschland I had forgotten most of it (except when I had a few)(too many). The weird thing is that most Germans I came across spoke english to some extent.

i cant believe how many similarites there are between langauges .......once you learn one you can kinda roll into another one from the same region .....

thats why english is really hard to learn bcoz its an oddball ...english is only one that puts the subject after the point .......so its backwards to the rest of the world LOL

"there are a lot of problems with this car" Vs. "problems with this car a lot there is"

its like getting used to driving a three speed on the tree for the first time

Ah, but there are a lot of similarities between German and English. Add in some rogue French and the occasional Spanish und Viola! English.

yup yup ....mysteriously with its backwardsness it still fits in the "romance" langauge group.

maybe bcoz they all share the Roman alphabet ...that made it harder for me bcoz my native langauge uses a different alphabet

odd that German has some different characters than the rest of the Romance group

now you got me going on spainish now

i think :

Uno
dos
tres
quarto
Cinco
sias
Siete
Ocho
Nueva
Thes

dang i think im going to pick up a spainish book now.

I'm pretty sure English is considered a Germanic language, even though it has taken many words from "romance" languages, and many other languages as well.

Hola .....Mr. David Senor........i might have the european langauges grouped a little wrong since they are not really my main thing LOL

but thanks for throwing that in

German in the romance group? Hun, pillow talk in German sounds more like instructions for diffusing a bomb.

the one thing that has me confused with english :

in my native langauge when writing .....if your a female which i am .....then you supposed to write "i" in the lower case only.....

if your male then you write "I" in upper case only.

example :

Male : I went to the store

Female : i went to the store

does english have any rules about this ?......at school i have seen some girls writing in the upper case which threw me for a loop LOL

in english it is I regardless of gender

If you moved to Mexico I would say learn to speak it.if you live in the USA he needs to speak it or go back were he came from:protest::protest::angryfir::angryfir: and that's what I think.................Artie

The problem here with Artie's quote is Artie grew up and lives in a section of America that ONLY speaks English. With that in mind, when someone comes to his side of the world, they should be able to AT LEAST understand some English. I would not go to China without knowing a few key words, like HELP, Bathroom, American consulate, Police, Where the Hookers at?

In a way I do not blame Artie's words.

However, this has allllllways been a multi langue country. Do not forget, when in the earliest of days of this country, German was almost the national tongue. English squeaked by with a narrow margin.

You could try getting the Rosetta Stone program. I don't know what the cost is but it is more teaching by listening instead of intense book learning.

Expensive but worth it by everyone I ever met to use it.

The suggestion of books and TV is excellent to back up the R Stone program IMO.

Germanic, yes, but there is also another name for the base type of language it is called, it escapes me at the moment. It is in line with Galic (SP?) Irish and Scoot's speak it.

Lastly, IMO, someone else said it before me, but YEA! By all means, learn it and step up in your in-laws eyes and hearts. Then, maybe you'll find more than just a stranger on the other side of the line.

Go for it!!!!!

Spanish! Man that is so last week! Here in Macon, Ga. The wisdom of our very liberal Board Of Education has imported about a dozen teachers from China to teach our elementary children Mandarin Chinese.

So there!

He best stay out of Nogales AZ, if I remember right the freeway signs are in Spanish. The speed signs are KMH. If he went into Maryvale, or the south side of Phoenix and made that statement out loud he best have a means of defending himself....
