Awhile back I posted about how the weather sucked and I wanted to get my exhaust system done.
Well, it took about 6 hrs for the drivers side swap out of the manifold and to get the headers on that side. ("The dark side" as we now call it) :banghead:
What a pain in the backside, and I might not have even done it if I knew in advance what it was going to take to get it done.
It was a LOT of work doing it on the ground with jackstands and blocks.

I do all the work myself, with a little help from my brother.
The Hedman headers fit tight as a glove in there, but we had to slightly dent the #3 down tube because it was just touching the power steering box mount bolt head.
We used Remflex header gaskets and I can see why they seal so well.
(Thick and soft so they crush)

The passenger side was easy, and I didn't have to use a 90 adapter to easily clear the headers (even with a full size Wix filter)

I decided to go all out with a slightly radical but unique design of an X pipe system.
Also overkilled it just a bit for a stock block 318 with 2.5 inch pipe off of 3 inch collectors and Flowmaster 40's, but it won't always be a 318.
I had stocker manifolds and the factory 2 into one with a 2 inch pipe that dumped right before the rear axle.

After the X pipe the two tubes run out just in front of the rear tires with an bit of an up turn around the subframe connectors and angle cut ends that match the body line and have a old school dragster hint to them.

I always said I was going to give this car an "industrial funtional" look.
Sounds amazing too, and I'm really happy with it, even though it took us old farts 3 day to recover. :-)

A few car **** pics for ya.

I always go bigger on the exhaust too for the same reason. I just never seem to get to the "next level". :( Doesn't matter to me, I always seem to get positive feedback on how my vehicles sound. Glad you're happy with the results!

Not sure how 2.5" is overkill? I was going to put 3" on my 360 with plans for an upgrade lol

I was going to be pissed if I didn't like it after all th work. :D

I always heard dual 2.5 inch was a little too big for anything but a big block.
Is that not the case?

Its a good size. Don't really need 3". I got 2.5 on my truck with no x or h and it runs great.

Not in my experience. I lost no low end torque with my 360. It lost a little with 3", but I planned on upgrading

I added headers and 2.5" exhaust to my stock 318 2 bbl in my 77 W200. Money well spent, it really woke the truck up! Man I still miss it. :'(

Question for ya: what is the little black thing on the firewall on the passenger side? My 70 duster had one that someone hacked up the firewall to get on there!

The two black things on the firewall are smog canister valves I think.
We don't have smog here so I never needed them.

2.5" is fine. 3" is exponentially more expensive then 2.5" plus for whatever reason, it is much louder and drones more easily.

3",is overkill for a 318 even a built 318 2.5 " is more than enough for even a 2 1/8" header remember you only fire one cylinder at a time. Big blocks like a bigger exhaust and a little back pressure is not a bad thing. It makes it have more torque (low end) to many people oversize there exhaust and wonder why they lose the low end...Bill

those things look like a nightmare to even build! but I guess they do have a big advantage but not really worth doing on a street car just for better exhaust gas tuning

Folks have done all kinds of stuff over the years including 180* cranks. Ferrari uses them

I had 2 1/2 inch on my 408 with no X or H pipe. It rapped on decell and was generally embarrassing me by sounding like a Chevy. I had 3" collectors on my TTi's and was running Flowmaster 10 series. it was very loud. I went to a local exhaust shop and he installed rolled true 3" all the way back to dual Flowmaster 40 series and put in an H pipe. No more rapping, still loud but not obnoxious, and I felt no loss of low end torque. The whole job including mufflers was $375 and he did great work. I am very happy.

That's a hell of a deal too.
I was quoted 400 just for the dual 2.5 without mufflers (I supplied them)
And that was with the existing factory manifolds so I decided to do it all myself.

So now, Hedman 1 5/8 long tubes, Hedman 3 inch collectors, 2.5 X pipe, 2 Flowmasters and all the hangar accesories cost me about 400 or so total.
Almost every day I get someone in traffic saying "That thing sounds really nice" :D

If you think that's all tough, go Google up "180 degree headers,"

I had forgotten all about those! If I ever build a car that has the room to use those I am gonna. Actually heard a car with those once. My shop teacher in college was building a Countach replica with a Pantera drivetrain. I wanted to make sweet, sweet love to those pipes- they sounded sooo nice.

Oops... Did I share too much? 8)
