It's about time for me to make a few changes to my engine and I'm leaning towards the camshaft. I have the Diplomat engine equipped with the "302 casting" heads and hydraulic roller camshaft. Its daily driven and hurt feelings too :D My goal is to increase performance without throwing my combination off. I know Hughes have a real nice idle which I love, but I also love performance. Can someone guide me to the light?

My current setup:
Edelbrock 750, Weiand Action+Plus Manifold, Ram Manifolds with 2 1/4" Pipe and 4" Glasspacks, Mallory Unilite, Summit Coil, Factory High Stall Converter (A904), 3.55 Gears, 26" Tires

Camshafts:

With 302 casting heads, I'm assuming 318???? If so, I'd change the carb too...to a 600 or so...better driveability, AFAIC.

...also a dual plane intake....

Just my $0.02 Cdn.

The Howards, hands down. Ordered one,2 sizes larger than that. Simply the cleanest machined cam,I have seen. I am a hardcore Crower guy,and I was impressed. Nice spec choice ,b.t.w..

How about that new "Howard Hughes" cam?

Sorry, LOL, I could not resist

I got 5 hughes cam that i have used in the last several years...all have performed great.

Problem with Hughes is their Cost....flat tappet cams are 250 bucks...I can get Howard flat tappet cam for 145....guess who cam I am going to buy in the future..

Stay away from Hughes? Wow! I thought all Mopar guys praised Hughes and their cams. I know Doug Herbert also carry hydraulic roller cams for the 318 as well. It seems like Howards is in the lead.

Yeah, it's a 318. The 750 does fine. I have no issues. Tuning took a while, but it was worth it. My 318 is sitting in the #1 spot in my city.

Well, you said "daily driver", not racecar. 600/dual plane would be better as a daily driver.

Of your choices, I like the Howards also. But, that Herbert 220/240 is interesting with your manifolds?

A nice grind ,yes .They run a full billet cam core. That doesn't normally work,
without a bronze gear. The Howard's is a drop in. I spent some time,on this subject. Ask,before you order....

I did say that. That's true, but it gets raced on a regular basis too. I'll need the 750 after head work, headers, etc.

I have the Dodge Ram manifolds that's suppose to flow pretty well from what I heard. I cannot complain so far, lol. I can a cheap set of shorty headers off eBay, but people say there isn't much difference between the headers and my manifolds. Long tube headers would be the route to go.

I live 12 miles from Hughes and I quit buying their garage a long time ago.I also know of many others who have had major issues with their cams and engines built by Hughes.I have used Comp cams the last 15 years without any issues.

I can understand the difference between the mani's and the shorty's. If you decide to go long tube, I'd guesstimate a extra 15hp and 25 lbs ft to go along with what the Howards or Comp provides.

:prayer: Thanks for sharing that.

Any HP/Performance gain will be good to me. I have people changing motors, buying race cars, and doing everything else in the book for my little 318. It's time for me to step it up also.

my hughes cam runs just fine

I`ve used Hughes cams in my last 3 mopar builds with no problem and great results I haven't used one of howards cams so I can`t give my opinion on them.

I run a Hughes solid flat tappet cam.( 276/280@ .050) I built the 408 motor in the beginning of 2007 and have over 1400 low 10. sec qtr mile passes now and the cam still looks great.

I have a Hughes cam in my car and it's runs good. It even was fine when my Chinese made Comp lifters went flat 4 years back. Won't buy Comp again!

Got a Hughes cam in my 340, love it. I think a lot of the problems people had with the early (10+years ago) Hughes cams stemmed from them being ground by Engle. That was about the time the ZDDP level in most of the motor oil went down too. Their cams are now ground by Bullet.

I really like the Huges stuff & support.
Used what they recommended for my build a few years back. Cam, springs, lifters, rockers & timing set.
I would have been happy with a 12.00. The engine ran a best of 11.28.
It ran for 5-years & 925 race passes plus street miles.
Broke the engine due to a failed KB piston. The cam still looks great.
Going to repair the engine & reuse the Huges componets.
In the past, I have ran MoPar, Comp, & Crane cams. All seem to work fine & were durable.
Proper selection & proper set up will not dissapoint you with any Cam manufacture.
I have never flatten a camshaft in 35 years.
