71 Duster 360 (new project)

Yeah…. you would never hear your collector extensions rattling like crazy as the 3 or 4 bolts that hold them on rattle themselves to death before they actually fall off.

Spring attached collectors I can see the need for these, but again you should be able to make these yourself, a Cert Tag?…… That is ridiculous.

All they really needed to do...was come up with a drawing and tell you have to use stainless steel clamp with 1/8 cable between the clamps...10 bucks...

the rule book has alot of drawing and pictures showing you how to do alot of things....but not tethers...lol

Ok...friend looked at my 8 3/4 case...he said it simple..the caps came off another rear end that is why they dont fit...duh...ok..bought it out of carson city couple years ago...for 40 bucks...

he took that rear and a good case ...said he would bring with him to the track on saturday...the duster will have to wait until next week to get the gear swap.

Gotta get tethers on the Dart....have not started that car yet...last ran in Bakersfield in Oct...Fired up my Demon this afternoon... 1st time since Sept....so everything is coming together for the weekend...checked tires on trailers and motorhome...got holley jets for 2300 series 2 barrel on MH...need a 60 get...leanest one I have was a 64....I know it has something like that in it....FAST A/F gauge shows A/F 11.8....need to lean it out so it will pass smog..again.

Jay..I installed the ones on my Demon like you did..with the cable under the rear clamp...but their website shows the tag bolted to the rear T- bolt.. So WTF...LOL

ok...

71 Duster 360.....rolls Saturday after another winter of work...

Now sports

360 .040 with Ross dome pistons...scat I beam rods...and trick 80 gram wrist pins...LOL
Holley Strip Dominator Intake with Mopar w2 heads with some bowl work and ports matched...heads have been in used on and off since 1985...

Cam is the tired and true MP 590 with crane 1.6 rockers...MP Race Electronic Distributor, MSD 6al..
TTi w2 1 3/4 stepped hearders.....904 TF with TA 4400 series converter (5200 flash) with Transzact Pro Brake...QFT 950-E85 carb....

Front end now sports RMS UCA and adjusable Strut rods with Strange lightweight brakes, Weld Drag light 15 x 3 rims...

Rear suspension is now Ladder bars with Jegs Double Adjustable shocks...9 x 29.5 MT slicks on 15 x 10 weld draglites, ...8 3/4 spool with 4.30 gears for this weekend...4.56 coming soon...plus a set of Strange light weight rear disc brakes...

Interior has 8 pt roll bar tied into the frame rails and 1 light weight bucket seat...

So as I say...the Clocks dont lie...so we will see come Saturday....and Sunday I hope

I'll have the "instructions" with me, and they don't say S##T about where that tag goes! I was kind of wondering with that hole and all. Also found it strange that they had the one end of the cable routed where it can't be removed from the clamp (primary clamp), but the big clamp you just route it under the bolt.

yeah..i installed mine...then looked at their website and i said...oh well...maybe if i have absolutely nothing to do...i will change it

:eek:ops:....well, at least I know what that hole in the other end of the tag is for....interesting that If I do install it that way the tech guy won't be able to see the "nhra approved" label. Now that I've had a set in hand, I'm quite certain that I should have just gone to the auto parts store and made a set myself. They have these very same clamps there, and I'm sure I could have come up with some cable and swedged ends quite easily.

i bought 8 each 3 inch stainless steel clamps off ebay for 15 dollars delivered to the front door...which less that 2 bucks a clamp...need 4 for each car...the crimps are 1.32 for 2 crimps at lowes...so that is 2.64...the cable is about .050 at foot....

2 feet of cable...1 dollar..
4 crimps.... 2.64 plus tax.
4 clamps... 8 bucks..

total ....... 11.64.....yeah....racers getting F ed again..

What about the NHRA tag though? No tag,no race?

What about the NHRA tag though? No tag,no race?

that is correct Scott....nhra requires the tag to show it is an APPROVED device...but...the racer who is not allowed to make that simple device is still charged with installing it...LOL....

you dipshit racer can install it...but you can not make it...

ok...Demon was on 4 post lift...up it goes..and i change the way the tag is so that is looks like the picture...now I know I am right...just look at the picture...

Working at the car wash.....

washed and cleaned 3 cars today....put header tethers on 71 dart...

the show rolls in the morning...

Good luck tomorrow guys!!! It's great to get back out there after several months. I'm sure it will be a little hectic with the new equipment...

I hope it's enjoyable, and by all means, stay safe...:thumbrig:

I hope things are going smooth today with no breakages Tony.I,ll be watching for an update on how you made out with the new Duster.

Get over to garage saturday morning...push my demon out to start it....fuel pump will not come on...look at fuses..all good...test light...pump is getting power..dam thing was just running two days ago....ok..that car is parked for the test n tune...got brand new spare pump ...will swap out tonight...

fire up 71 Duster...put it on trailer ...head for track with Duster and Dart....2 out of 3....

Tonya Dart...runs fastest time in Vegas....10.59 and 10.60 before head wind shows up...

Had to wait until Christin gets out of class...finally get to track around 1 pm....I had drove car around pits...everything was working fine....transmission shifts...brake works...2 step engages...blah...blah..

Duster 1st pass....a little confusion on driver part with engaging trans brake and foot braking...car goes 1.68 60 ft time..and runs 11.37 @ 117+....ok...not bad..car launched straight...steered straight..

Duster 2nd pass....good burn out....stages..engages brake...engine on 2 step...rpm goes up...car moves 10 ft maybe...something breaks ....after getting it off the flat bed.....well..it is not the rear end...
ok.....fire engine put in gear...wheels dont move.....I guess maybe pump twangs broke..

get the car home....decide to see if i can get it fixed ....bracket race is at noon sunday...get motor and trans out....get trans off....I can see twangs still on pump....so either the converter eat it self..or something else broke in trans...

ok...get 904 and converter that was previously in car...take out TA valve body...take out Brake out of broken trans..get brake installed in other trans...things going good...

i need case plug for trans brake...i try to unbolt the one of out broken trans..and it breaks off at case...ok...have another plug...wait it is in motorhome at track...drive back to track to get it...and back to garage.....drill case....do not have 1/8 npt tap to thread case.....ok...lets put motor/trans back in car..can tap case in morning...get passenger side header bolted up..oil filter back on...radiator back in car...cross member bolted in...

1:38 am...going home...shower...back at garage at 7:30 am...assessing what needs to be done...need tap....head down to Harbor Freight couple miles from garage ...dont open until 9am...head to lowes by the garage...we dont carry any taps....autozone...nope....guys say try Lake Mead Hardware....drive over there...they dont open until 9 am....

ok...just after 8 am...i can go back to garage and get starter....driver side headers..and hook trans linkage....dont know what happen to starter...but it will not sit flat again trans case....ok...back to hardware store...get tap...back to autozone...I can get you a starter here by noon....3 stores with in a few miles dont have one either......we dont have one of those in stock.......Ok...I am done...

OK...It is 9 30 in morning...I will swap out fuel pump and take Demon out to track...swap out pumps...connect wires.....hit switch pump makes noise...but sounds weak...put fuel in tank....hit switch...sounds like ****...no fuel pressure...put more fuel in take...hit switch...It is barely making any noise...no fuel pressure......new holley black 140 gph pump....been in box for about ....7 or 8 yrs...toast....

totally exhausted....head to track to watch tonya race

thinking maybe that house/garage is build on an old indian buried grounds...cause since I parked that demon over there....dead batteries...dead pump....dead alternator...

well...taking a couple days off...then get back to the grind...that duster will go down the track...lol

Wow,sounds like a busy weekend. We all know you,ll get them fixed up right for your next outing.
