Differences between 273 Commando Silenced Air Cleaners?

-
Thanks for pics. What the heck only been working on mopars 35 years! What do I know. Never saw one.

CAP AFB 4bbl cars slso had 3 step metering rods under 'dimpled' covers.

Almost all Chrysler AFB and AVS had 3 step rods and the dimpled covers.

The Commando/Charger chrome air cleaners had the breather nipples or not. I think they depended if they were CAP or not. It seemed like more 67's had the breather nipple, maybe they became standard around 67? I have both.

On the left side of that first mopar muscle pic, it is a pcv valve running from the passenger side of the engine to the front of the carb. The breather is on the drivers side. So the question remains, what is the carb?

It was not for PCV, but the breather on the valve cover. Look closely at some of the pictures.

Hmmm, Well... 1st picture in post #27 is that of a Hose out the front of the carb to the PCV on the passenger side Valve cover!!! Just saying...

:coffee2:

Curious what carb that is that would have a big vacuum port out the front for pcv??

My original carb on my 66 has a pcv port on the front.

Hmm. I see, so the 66 carbs didn't have the master air/idle/mix adjust screw up front. Thanks for clearing that up Mike. I didn't realize the 66s was when Carter changed on the carbs.

What I'm talking about. Original 65 MT carb.

Yes... As far as the 273LA engine goes, that was ONLY found on the 1965 4BBL cars... 4 speed cars used a Carter 3853S and the automatic was a Carter 3854S

Peeps see that big brass screw on my carb at car shows and wonder what the hell it is... Gotta love it :D

All original AFB's on Commando /Charger engines have PCV port on the front, except 65 where the Idle adjustment is. I thought we were still talking about air cleaners...

Arizona emissions.. J/K :D My Cuda was also built in LA California...

Didn't think there was much more to add to this thread in terms of 4bbl air cleaners in this old revived thread... Summary is, CAP cars had the tubes, non CAP didn't. The LA plant produced both versions. Pics galore, most look alike...

As far as I can find out the Chrome air cleaner only came with out tube. I believe the ones we see with tube is simply a slant 6 cleaner that was chromed. Im might be wrong but the pics I have seen of these restored 273s leaves a lot of questions. 67 valve covers on one so the proof of pics of these restored cars is lacking. The fuel lines are incorect on most so Im not buying the tube is a CAP on chrome air cleaners. Need more proof IMO.

I have had both styles original chrome. They came both ways. I've had more than a few original untouched 273's. Proof? don't know how to do that.

Ahhh the grassy knoll theory.............We need more proof beyond the original magazine pics posted all over this site.

Here's one. All the HP engines had chrome air cleaners. The 2 barrel engines had the black air cleaners with a snorkel. The black unsilenced cleaners were used on slant 6's and big blocks.

This is correct.. All they (Chrysler) did was chrome an existing designed air cleaner for the 273 4BBL ...

Hmmm, Must be a Conspiracy... even the 1965 MOPAR Parts book thinks they existed... J/K
I've had both (a number of times) starting in 1965 when I bought a Dart GT 273 4BBL 4 speed car brand new (Brads Motors in Fall River Mass.)... Just saying... Don't know how to prove it other then P/N 2532 616

I would say correct! I have a cd parts book for 1966 and the air cleaners (covers) are all different part numbers and are divided by" with CAP and without CAP". I have a parts interchange book and the 1966 carbs, intakes, and distributors listed are all different part numbers for CAP or w/o CAP. I didn't notice a difference in part numbers in early 1965. Your parts book was from May of 65. Was that the start of the 1966 model year? The CAP program started in 1966 obviously. tmm

My dad's 1966 Barracuda Formula S has a chrome air cleaner with the breather tube and the assembly has never been restored....I'll see if I can find a picture or take one this weekend when I see his car.

Need more proof IMO.

Got answers from people who started with untouched cars, experts, and even have quotes from TSM's. Quoting Mikes upgraded valve covers doesn't even cast any doubt on the all the air cleaners posted that all have the same holes in them.

Only other thing you can do for proof at this point is build a time machine :) ;-) ;-)

Good evening,

Thank you all, I was interested in these insights as well.
I've got a 66 Barracuda Formula S that was built in L.A.
California purchased in Oregon and it did not have the C.A.P.
It would also be considered stock.

Thank you, C.

Some 66 2 barrel 273's had the unsilenced air cleaner with the 2 barrel base plate. I had one. It was black.
