Roadrunner or Not

I understand that most of us hate to see someone get screwed on a car deal but this was a supposed higher end car without a vin tag. I have no sympathy.

How many of you talking about the OP's vehicle being impounded have ever been stopped and had the officer look at your VIN tag?

i've had it done to me in a newer dakota for god sakes..

theres a difference between an officer checking to see if a vin matches and noticing if a vin no is missing .....especially if its near the inspection tag

In 30+ years of driving I've been pulled over a dozen or so times & only once did they check the VIN but that's not the point. You'd be driving an illegal car & that would bother most people. If you were driving a stolen car that would probably bother you despite the probability you would not be pulled over. Personally I would never buy a car without a VIN or even the lesser case of a reissued VIN, just not worth the hassle. I once passed on a fabulous '71 RR with 440+6 at Carlisle with a very low price but it was previously stolen & had all VINs removed & replaced with DOT reissued ones.

Very well said, sir.

The OP got pretty quiet.....

And I wonder why! Some of the comments in this thread, imho, were completely uncalled for. All of us stood to gain a lot of valuable info as this problem played out. Every now and again a thread is started which deals with the issue of cloning and VIN tags being sold on ebay. We just might have had a real live case to study -now it's probably been wasted. If I were the OP I doubt I would read past the third page, and probably never come back.

The fact is, she lives in Texas. Hearing about what (would) or (might) happen in California or Wisconsin or Florida may or may not be relevant. They certainly do have problems, not necessarily insurmountable, but problems. I think we just pissed away a great opportunity to learn something from it.

And for those of you who were so smug in your smart-*** responses, let's hope that you don't ever get taken on any transaction, cars or otherwise. Not that it would, because you are so smart. But you know what they say - Karma is a *****.

I acquired enough tickets to almost loose my license years ago and not even once did any officer ever look at my VIN tag. Is it possible, yes, but is it probable, I think not. I think some of you are paranoid about Johnny Law for no reason. I have found that if you don't give him a reason to screw with you, he usually won't.

I had the VIN checked during a traffic stop while on a classic motorcycle, and the officer even cross-checked the engine VIN and the frame VIN. This was in a small town in PA.

I've had customers in the past who were pulled over in cars from the '50's.

Once the officer noticed there's no VIN tag in the dash right under the registration sticker and inspection sticker, it's usually a red flag, especially since a majority of stops are done on newer cars. The officers have even asked as to where the VIN tag is. Once they open the door and show them it's riveted on the jamb, then numbers are taken a look at to make sure.

Here in Virginia, whenever I got pulled over (been 10+ years since the last time) the officer would look at the VIN tag. Never had one compare it to the registration, but they would shine their flashlight on it to see if it was there.

i had a cop so young and dumb he could not be convinced that my car never HAD a dash vin, just on the doorjamb. he had to go get on the radio and call in. of course this is MY TIME he's causting me all this time, and never a real "sorry to hold you up," either. "ok you are free to go."

gee thanks, as if I wasn't "free" before YOU came along.

Try convincing some of the young(er) state safety inspection guys that your car didn't come with back up lights...

Or when you turn the headlights on the front markers go off by default.

The VIN on the title and stamped near the radiator both match and start with RM23...

Thanks C130 Chief.

That's how we feel about it anyway. It is a beautiful car and if in fact it is a Satellite Cloned to a RR, they did a fabulous job of it. The price was right too and we've had fun driving it. No trailer Queen for this car. Definitely a Whiskey Runner :)

Thanks 72bluNblu - I'm hoping for the best. The title VIN and the VIN on the radiator casing match. I can't read the VIN in the trunk and after about 15 minutes in the situp position, hurt the gut muscles for a few days afterward. This 50+ age is catching up to me.

I feel like we got a great deal. It cranks and runs like a champ and body is very, very straight, inside seats are in great shape, no rips or tears and glass is clean.

We'll have fun with it no matter.

I still have my sweet 1970 Numbers Matching 340 Dart Swinger so I'm happy.

Hi DDodger

From what I've seen in my research, the 68 had both a dash tag and body vin plate.

Did someone say otherwise? If so, I missed that post.

Thanks 1967 Cuda. I do have the names of the two previous owners. Guess I could start there.

Thanks MikeC

You hit it right on. Bought it for a reasonable price, haven't had to put much $ in it just a little sweat equity and man, oh man, is it sweet. Our good buddy, a Chevy only man, drools over it.

Not looking to make any money off of it or win any trophies, just to have a good running Whiskey Runner.

Naturally, I would like to know its history and if stolen, to return it to its rightful owner or at least connect with them.

Thanks MikeDevore!

I'm totally with you on that issue. Call it what it is. That's why I'm trying to do some due diligence so that we can call it what it is.

Hell we paid half what the other RRs were going for so don't feel like we were jipped. Just as happy with a Satellite cloned RR but trying to figure out the mystery.

Thanks EL5DEMON340 - it definitely has 8 3/4 rearend and hd leaf springs. Will check out the rest this weekend and get back to you.

I agree. Even FABO has ASSes, I thought only CHEVY drivers were that way.

Heres a story for you. I was 19 years old in the navy. Saw a Mopar on a fork lift going to the crusher. I yelled STOP! It was a 64 sport fury convt, 426 wedge 4 speed car, All there and complete. Bought it, got it running good and REG in California with salvage title. Alls good for 5 years. Then I moved to Indiana and took it to cop shop to get VIN verified to REG in Indiana. Im waiting and here comes the trooper with weapon drawn!! Seems it was stolen in 1966 and was still on hot sheet, just not in California. Vin had been tampered with and trooper caught it. I lost that sweet car on the spot, walked back to my fathers house. YOU NEVER KNOW!!
