Why do people drive these things until they are down right dangerous?

Most of the 44 year old bushings were gone, much less old and cracked............
Trans and rear-end next. They're shot too.

There is a chance that the owners are just not aware of it and think it's okay to have 17 degrees of slop in your steering.
When I was living in the Netherlands and a car over 3 years old needed to have a annual check-up to ensure a safe to drive on the road and if it did not pass the inspection you could not have your plates renewed.
I once had a car disqualified because it needed some lower control arm bushings. That car was not allowed back on the road until I had that bushings replaced we inspected and found to be acceptable.

I am all for small less intrusive government, but perhaps this is a point that I would be willing to secede in order to increase in general safety of the public, because like you said some cars are just plain dangerous and not just to the drivers themselves

I agree. Since they did away with inspections in Florida you see some real sh1tboxes driving around. Our Troopers are supposed to do spot inspections. Yea right as they flee to other LE agencies because of overwork and low pay.

Yes the rubbers are gone. It aint about to fall apart.
When I finally retired and parted our old 73 Valiant, those parts looked identical to your pics ( except left side ). Lower arm squeaked loud, especially over speed bumps. The strut rod would bam abam bam bam sometimes, under hard corner accel'. I would say "That's pistons hitting the inner fenders" LOL. Just any old beater to haul garbage to the dump, etc... So when I see an old beater on the streets I assume they do own much nicer vehicles. Just getting all the good out of that one.

And the rubber has been gone for awhile. Look close at the pivot shaft you can see the grove the LCA was wearing in it. I guess the bright side is when they're that wore out they come out easy, without a lot of banging. Haha

Looks just about broke in to me.
Haha. Broke being the keyword. I knew the front end was shot when we bought it and would need a complete overhaul. But we took it out for a quick spin after we fired the motor and it was hard to keep in one lane. Scary.

All that power to the rear wheels will do that
:poke:

As long as the radio still worked .............
Unfortunately after we get done replacing every piece that can be replaced under the front end (left side is done pretty much. Was making good progress until I blew out my shoulder torquing the pitman arm. Probably have to rest it for a couple days) we start with the electrical Gremlins. One of which is the non-operational radio. Haha. Let's see, no headlights, no running lights except tail lights, we have brake lights. Blinkers work. No Hazard. Right side interior light works that's the only one, key switch light and timer works. Good grief. That's all for another thread though..........

Sounds like the bulkhead connectors are fragged.

Diy oil changers never inspect anything. Ok most of them. Ok some garages too. Ok most garages. How many dealerships have a certified technician in the lube bay? ZERO!
You are at the mercy of a inexperienced beginner in the trade. Or worse yet the dont-give-a-shitters.
So, small shop, owner is a tech or all the guys are techs and ask if they have a service checklist. Most have some sort of checklist.

Paying 60-70 for an oil change that is no better than a dump and fill is a waste of money and a dangerous practice.

Excuse me for my rant, but its true.
Ball joint inspections in a drive through-anybody ever jack your vehicle or ask you to turn steering wheel?doubt it. Any vehicle nudging over 60,000 should get regular inspections.

I TOTALLY agree. We don't have any inspections at all in Kansas. Sometimes I see an old pick up truck beside me that has rockers that are almost gone, fenders with more rust than metal, and rear wheel well lips that are gone. I always think, "If what I can see is that bad, I bet the floor pans and structure are shot too. Probably should not be on the road. I'd be 100% for an inspection.

Agreed. Which is why I-4 is now a free-for-all. The only time you see law enforcement is at the scene of an accident. On the plus side, you can drive around with slicks and open exhaust!

Rant on. This car came with stacks of receipts from repair shops. Somebody (tried) maintained it very well. It only had 64,000 original miles but 44 years is 44 years. Hard to believe a tech never caught or said anything about the worn out front end. No receipts from a front end shop, of course.

At least in WV we have annual inspections, every car must go thru.
Complete front end inspection, brake check, lights, body rust etc. So the cars here are pretty decent if still running on the road.

Ohio cars on the other hand have no inspections, I will never buy a car from that state, if it still starts, it is running down the road.
