I've been looking for a spare engine to build up over time - as money allows....
After searching a long time, I found this one and haggled it down to $50.....
Gonna pick it up next week...woohoo!

The plan is:
Stroke it to 390
Roller cam and lifters
Edelbrock heads
Fuel injection
9.5 - 10.0 to 1 compression

Looks nice and crusty, 2 barrel. ....just the way I like it.
Means it's probably never been bored and never abused....
It was running 3 months ago when pulled.

I have the rods you need for the 390 (brand new), I'm not going to use them after all. Pic on request

Thanks......when funds are there, I'll hit you up for sure

A 318/390 stroker should be a LOT of fun!
While everyone is all 360/408, I loves me a 318!

Jeff

  • Notice how fast the 318 closes the gap when you put a 4"arm in each a 360 vs 318. Go from a 42 cube deficit to a 18 cube deficit.
  • Depends on your cam and how hard you plan on spinning it, you might want to look at half filling the block.
  • 390 w/aluminum heads/nice roller cam in your car with 3.55's, low 11's/high 10's with things set up right....

Awesome, I will be following you on this one Jeff! Curious to what a stroker 318 will end up costing.

I don't think it's a roller engine. ....I'll go retro rollers.....
Gonna be a fun project!

Jeff

While the Edelbrock heads are a nice improvement you do realize that it is not enough head OOTB to feed 390 cubes. Just sayin, not bustin.

Would a home porting job do the trick?
Or a better head recommend....at about the same price range?
I don't' care iron or alum......

Jeff

Trick Flow is supposed to be coming out with small block heads later this summer...

Here's the info. Not sure what the actual date is, but if you're not building this second it probably doesn't matter....

Look, eddy heads are highly recommended for a .030 360. what we talk'n, 25 cubes? Run 'em. I'm sure the eddy heads will do just fine. Shoot, you could throw a set of home-ported 360 smog heads with 1.88's and it would scream. If you were shooting for 575 - 600 hp then visit the heads. There are a lot of iron head 410's out there that are rock'n.

Honestly, 400 - 425 hp is just fine with me.....and gobs of torque!

Jeff

Jeff, they’ll do fine up top, as is. Once you said stroke to a 390, I sure didn’t think your up have als were as you stated. Having a mad amount of torque is great though.

The trick flow heads flow approximately what a well ported set of Edelbrock heads do.

Hummmmm, I’m not sure about that but..... maybe you’ll get lucky. What year is that 318?

I have been looking into the 390 too. When I bought my 67, a 74 318 was in there and running. I was building a 440 for my Dakota and got the cuda. Now the 440 is going in the Barracuda and I was thinking about doing the 390 in the Dakota. I went with the TFS 240 for the 440 and probably would go TFS for the small block too

A friend did a 318/390. Man that thing fly's,in a B body wagon to boot.
I have a roller cam 318 from a 1985 Diplomat. Block date is 1984. I can't say if it is true or not but was told if the 318 engine is painted Black, good chance it's a roller.
Another thing I have heard is all 2 bbl 85-up LA's were rollers but not the 4 bbl. ? Possible just a myth.
