Ultimate home defence pistol?

-
Old boss of mine, an ex- deputy had his theories about home defense weapons. First 2 in the nightstand revolver were birdshot the rest were .38 specials. The .38s were a special concoction he loaded just for that purpose, cast hollow base wad cutters loaded upside down so that massive hollow base was the business end of things and at lower velocities so it didn't damage things 2 rooms away. Another was using an all brass 12 ga load in a pump shotgun. He said the sound of that brass cartridge getting jacked into the chamber was so un-nerving it got the attention of the intruder long before things escalated.

I have owned many many Taurus and have yet to find one that didnt function flawlessly. Granted some are a little rough around the edges may not be as pretty as I like or the trigger might not be as light as I prefer but they all function and for the price I'd highly recommend one for a carry gun or a truck gun. Or even a beginning shooter just starting out that dont have a grand to drop on a high dollar gun. As a matter of fact I still carry a Taurus TCP 380 everyday as a backup to my glock 26.

my daily carry is a taurus 709
does great, provided i keep it clean BUT i like the trigger pull on my ruger SR9 way better

only time you're gonna hear me rack the slide on my 12 guage is after i fired the round that was in the chamber
im not gonna waste time and give away my position AND cut my shot count down by 20%

Well, the shotgun **** was enough for me to take notice of granny in the condo that I was behind (I knocked twice and have easement) removing a piece of telephone gear from the exterior wall. She told me to get the hell out of here, and I told her "Yes Ma'am." I didn't even try to explain the piece of hardware was not even in use. (Check shorts once inside truck.....)

Raise your hand if you have ever actually needed to use one of these weapons to defend your home.

Of course, I own plenty of firepower if I need it...but never have had to use any of it even when living in neighborhoods where you think you might.

I rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it

I still get upset thinking about this subject, I almost shot my father one night. We lived back a hollow down a long lane and our farm was the only one back there. Daddy slipped home from work and we didn't know he was home, I was upstairs in my room listing to music. He picked up my basket ball out of the front yard and bounced it off the roof. I heard it, my mother heard it and yelled for me to come down. I ran down and we heard it again. I grabbed my Winchester 12ga. Shotgun and pulled the hammer back and went to the front door, only me and god knows how close I came to pulling the trigger when daddy jerked the door open. It still makes me sick to this day thinking about it. We all learned a lesson that night about practical jokes. My dad has always been a good jokster and pulled good prank's on me all in fun and I love that he has always been that way. He made me a car guy because he was one and I'm thankful the lord made me hesitate pulling that trigger.

That wasn’t the question I asked.
What I mean was I thought I needed to use it, and almost did, thank goodness I didn't. Please don't think I meant anything toward your post, it just reminded me of a time I almost did, I respect you, your one of my favorites on the site, sorry if I came across wrong.

That's why my home defense pistol has an 800 lumen light on it.

Target identification is key in home defense.

When that light hits eyes dilated for darkness two things happen. One the target is now blind and two, I can clearly see what or who is in front of my pistol.

Have I ever needed it, no.

When you need the police right this second, the're minutes away....

I did almost shoot a bear in my living room once tho. All I was thinking the entire time is this is gonna be loud....
Not sure if me yelling at him made it leave or it just got tired of destroying my kitchen.

Ripped the door off the oven, ripped the door off the fridge, tore up the trash and walked back out the door.

I wish had pics of the claw marks he put in my front door.

I had to pull my gun on a couple of punks in Macon once. I was in my 65 Valiant pre V8 swap and my fuel filter was constantly stopping up because I hadn't yet pulled the tank and cleaned it. It stalled on me and I was able to coas into a Roses parking lot. I got the filter off and knocked the dirt out and got it going again. As I was sitting there, door still open and car running, two guys stepped up single file to my open door. The front one pulled a knife and said "we'll be needin your money". I pulled my stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum out from the seat and trans tunnel, pulling the hammer back at the same time and said "not tonight boys". I am really glad they backed off. Had they not, I would have killed them both with one shot and probably gotten an innocent bystander, because although they were right there, my gun was pointed toward the front of the store. The expression on his face was priceless, though.

I had a super Blackhawk once, had to sell it in hard times ----------

Another Taurus owner here. Titanium frame 7-shot .357 with ported barrel. Its so accurate it's like a handheld rifle and I think it may be louder than my 12ga.

Now, I did have to send it in for warranty fix when it was pretty new but they did and it's been dead reliable since. We're talking 12 years now.

I recently picked up a G2C in .40 but cant comment yet on its performance.

My cousin in Alaska had to shoot a bear in his kitchen. The bear was undecided if it would leave or not. Billy shot it in the backside to help his decision. Shotgunned bear escaped through the kitchen window.

I inherited my father's old Winchester model 12 20ga pump. Never thought much about it, was in a dark corner of a local small pawn/ gunstore, and here was some buck for the 20ga. I bought it all. Then I came home and searched, and a 20ga at close range is pretty impressive. More power than a .44 mag.

Plus I learned how quick it is to break them down, just like in the movie "Bullitt" (that was an earlier exposed hammer, 1897?)

I have a model 12 pump, too. 12 gauge and I dated it to around 1933. Was my granddad's. Shoots good!

20 ga is formidable. Velocities and shot capacity very similar to a 12ga. I traded into a 20ga "youth model" Mossberg, short tube and short stock. Fit me in a very comfy manner. Took it to the trap range one day with my boss and killed 17 pigeons in my first attempt ever. "What have you got there? Gimme that" says the boss who was a very accomplished trap shooter. He got 19 birds. "I like it. It points so easy" he says.

Have also owned multiply Taurus pistols and I would not trust one to save my life.

If we are talking pistols only here then I’m going with my M&P 2.0. Is rather have 15 in the magazine than 5.

Wonder how indoor ranges feel about rifle/shot rounds in a pistol.
